Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

One of the most beloved festivals in Ciociaria

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the most heartfelt tradition in Arnara, a small, perched village in the Ciociaria region, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio). Every year on July 16th, the day of the liturgical solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, the town gathers around its Sanctuary for a celebration that has combined popular faith, art, and tradition for over a century.

The flower festival along the Borgo delle Cave

The artistic heart of the festival is the infiorata (flower festival): throughout the day, the inhabitants of Arnara compose authentic carpets of petals, sacred designs, and geometric figures made with flowers and natural materials along the historic center's streets. The route begins near the Church of the Madonna del Carmine and, crossing the historic Borgo delle Cave (via Borgo Cave), climbs up to the center of the village, towards the area the locals call Porta Abball'. It is a collective effort that involves entire families and is increasingly appreciated by visitors each year.

The candlelight procession

The most evocative moment arrives in the evening. After the solemn Holy Mass at 8:30 PM, presided over by the diocesan Bishop and accompanied by the Parish Choir, the solemn procession begins around 9:00 PM, traveling from the Sanctuary of the Carmine to the Parish Church of San Nicola. The faithful walk along the flower-covered path holding lit candles, in a hushed atmosphere of prayer and deep emotion that represents the community's profound bond with its patroness.

The Sanctuary and the tradition

The Church of the Madonna del Carmine in Arnara was built at the end of the 18th century during hydraulic works related to the nearby spring. Since then, Marian devotion has accompanied the village's life, giving rise to a festival that has expanded over time from just Via Borgo Cave to the other historic streets of the town. In the first part of the day, a traditional fair takes place along the center's streets, featuring stalls and local products, while the afternoon and evening are dedicated to the art of the infiorata.

A village to discover

The festival is also an opportunity to explore Arnara and the Valle Latina: alleys, courtyards, and glimpses of the historic center provide a natural frame for the floral compositions. Organized by the Municipality of Arnara, the event is free to attend and attracts visitors from across the province of Frosinone and the rest of Lazio, eager to admire one of the most authentic Marian events in Ciociaria.
