The 'Bethlehem of Sannio': the village of Porti transforms into a nativity scene
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the Municipality of Faicchio, in the province of Benevento (Campania), Christmas has a fixed appointment: the Faicchio Living Nativity, also known as 'the Bethlehem of Sannio'. The performance takes place in the historic village of Porti, in the Casali di Faicchio area, where houses, courtyards, stables, and cellars are restored to their former appearance to host the Nativity scenes. It is a community event, organized by the Ave Gratia Plena Parish together with dozens of local volunteers: in December 2025, it reached its twenty-seventh edition, confirming its status as one of the best-known living nativity scenes in the Sannio region.
Visitors don't just watch the nativity scene from the outside; they walk through it. The route winds through the village alleys, from scene to scene, with participants continuing to work, cook, spin, and forge iron just as they did in the past. In its most popular editions, the nativity scene has featured around 300 costumed participants, 35 ancient craft stations, three detailed cellars, and three refreshment areas.
The atmosphere is further enhanced by music and a multimedia narration broadcast along the path: an audio system accompanies the walk, sharing the Gospel story without breaking the magic of the village. Several editions have added scenic effects—such as the large comet star illuminating the Nativity and artificial snow—which are very popular with children. A historical photo exhibition also tells the story of how the event has grown over the years.
The nativity scene is more than just a religious re-enactment: along the route, taverns and refreshment points offer typical local products, allowing visitors to taste the Sannio Christmas while observing the scenes. In some editions, visitors were given a village coin to spend in the shops, a detail that reinforces the illusion of having truly stepped back in time.
Faicchio is a town of just over three thousand inhabitants, at 175 meters above sea level, overlooking the Titerno river and surrounded by the Matese mountains, between Mount Acero and the mountains that enclose the Telesina valley. The town is dominated by the Ducal Castle, built in the 12th century by the Sanframondo counts and transformed between the 15th and 16th centuries by the Monsorio family, who redesigned the facade and courtyard inspired by the Castel Nuovo in Naples; one of the four cylindrical towers, the one facing the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, collapsed centuries ago, likely due to an earthquake. Visiting the living nativity is therefore also a way to discover one of the most evocative villages in inland Campania, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
The living nativity is traditionally held in the days immediately following Christmas: the 2025 edition took place from December 26 to 28, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with free admission. At the time of our last check (July 2026), the dates for the December 2026 edition had not yet been announced: it is best to follow the 'Presepe Vivente Faicchio' Facebook page and the Ave Gratia Plena Parish website, where the program is usually published in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
Because it is a nativity scene created by an entire town, not a professional troupe: you can feel it in the care for the costumes, the authentic cellars, and the warmth of the refreshment points. And because the setting—a stone village at the foot of a Norman castle, in the heart of the Benevento province—does the rest without needing additional scenery. A late December evening in Faicchio remains one of the most authentic ways to experience Christmas in Campania.
The Faicchio Living Nativity usually takes place between December 26 and 28, in the evening, in the historic village of Porti in the Casali di Faicchio area (province of Benevento, Campania). For the December 2026 edition, neither the dates nor the program have been communicated yet: information is usually released in the weeks preceding Christmas through the 'Presepe Vivente Faicchio' Facebook page and the Ave Gratia Plena Parish website.
Those planning to visit can refer to the format of previous editions—a walking route through the village alleys, costumed participants, ancient craft stations, set-up cellars, and refreshment points with local products—keeping in mind that times, itinerary, and any new features will only be confirmed by the official announcement.
By car: from the A1 (Rome or Naples) take the Caianello exit, then the SS372 'Telesina' towards Benevento and exit for Faicchio. By train: Telese Terme station, connected to Naples and Benevento, then bus or taxi to Faicchio. By plane: Naples Capodichino Airport.
In the 2025 edition, the route was open from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM with free admission. Dates and times for December 2026 have not yet been announced.
