The village of Montemarciano opens its hidden treasures for Italy's biggest heritage festival
The FAI Spring Days are the most important national event dedicated to Italy's cultural and landscape heritage, promoted by the FAI - Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano since 1993. Every year, on a weekend in March, hundreds of places usually closed or little-known are opened free of charge to the public throughout Italy. In the area covered by the Senigallia Delegation, the Municipality of Montemarciano, in the province of Ancona and in the heart of the Marche region, is among the protagonists of the initiative with a programme focused on its historic centre.
The focal point of the event in Montemarciano is the Vittorio Alfieri Theatre, an architectural gem of the village. The tour explores the theatrical space through its architecture, scenography, and performance, guiding visitors to discover the theatre's history and decoration. The tours are led by apprentice cicerones, specially trained students from the "Falcinelli" secondary school, who share the beauty of their territory with the public.
Among the most evocative openings are the civic caves in the historic centre, underground structures normally inaccessible to the public, where visitors can admire the remains of the ancient medieval walls of the Piccolomini castle. These subterranean spaces reveal a new and secret side of the village.
The programme is enriched by collateral initiatives that blend art, science, and performance:
The FAI Spring Days in Montemarciano are the result of collaboration between the FAI, the Senigallia Delegation, the Municipality of Montemarciano, and numerous local entities. In addition to enhancing the village's heritage, the event represents an important moment for raising awareness and fundraising to support FAI's conservation mission: donations are welcome with every visit. For the Marche community, it is a fundamental element in the policies for promoting and enhancing the territory, capable of attracting numerous tourists, both Italian and foreign, each year.
The thirty-fourth national edition of the FAI Spring Days was held on Saturday, March 21st (3:00 PM - 6:00 PM) and Sunday, March 22nd (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM), 2026. In Montemarciano (AN), the Vittorio Alfieri Theatre was the centre of the initiative, with a tour dedicated to the theatrical space exploring architecture, scenography, and performance.
Among the most popular openings were the civic caves with remains of the medieval walls of the Piccolomini castle, the exhibition of antique clarinets by Andrea Greganti paired with tomographic studies from the Marche Polytechnic University, and theatrical experiments by the Asini Bardasci Company and the Tok Tok project. The visits, guided by apprentice cicerones from the "Falcinelli" school, recorded over 400 attendees, with significant participation from foreign tourists.
