About Museum Night at Saepinum

For one night in May, the ancient Roman city of Altilia-Saepinum, one of the best-preserved archaeological sites in Southern Italy, opens its gates to the public in the evening. The European Museum Night, promoted by the Ministry of Culture with the patronage of UNESCO, the Council of Europe, and ICOM, allows visitors to wander through the forum, theatre, and monumental gates of Sepino for a symbolic fee of 1 euro, in a timeless atmosphere.

A Night Among the Ruins of Saepinum

The European Museum Night is an international initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Culture with the patronage of UNESCO, the Council of Europe, and ICOM, which annually opens museums and archaeological sites across Europe in the evening. In Sepino (province of Campobasso), the protagonist is the archaeological area of Altilia-Saepinum, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in Southern Italy.

The Roman City of Altilia

Saepinum preserves the layout of a small Roman city intact: the forum, the basilica, the theatre, the baths, and especially the four monumental gates with the city walls, now nestled in the Matese countryside. Visiting it in the evening, when the low-angled lights enhance the remains, offers a different experience from a daytime visit.

Symbolic Entrance Fee of 1 Euro

During the Museum Night, the archaeological area remains open in the evening for a symbolic fee of 1 euro (subject to legal exemptions), with initiatives designed to showcase the Park's heritage and the institute's activities. It's the ideal opportunity to discover or rediscover one of Molise's archaeological treasures.
