About Corpus Christi Ancona

Every year, on the occasion of the solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Ancona experiences one of the most heartfelt moments of the city's religious calendar. From the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, which overlooks the Guasco hill and the port, the Archbishop leads the Holy Mass and the traditional Eucharistic procession that winds through the streets of the historic center. An appointment of faith and community that draws believers, confraternities, and citizens, and concludes with the solemn Eucharistic blessing imparted to the city from the Cathedral's parvis.

A Tradition of Faith in the Heart of Ancona

The Eucharistic Procession of Corpus Christi is one of the most deeply rooted religious events in the life of the Municipality of Ancona, the capital of the Marche Region. The solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, celebrated on the Sunday following the Holy Trinity, finds its most solemn expression here in the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, the Romanesque cathedral that dominates the gulf and the port of Ancona from the top of Guasco hill.

The Celebration and the Procession

The program begins with the Holy Mass presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Ancona-Osimo, accompanied by a homily and, in some editions, the conferral of ministries and mandates to the faithful of the Diocese. At the end of the celebration, the Eucharistic procession begins: the Most Holy Sacrament, carried in exposition under a canopy, descends from the Cathedral and winds through the streets, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and the faithful in prayer.

The route winds through the streets and stairways connecting the Cathedral hill to the lower city, before returning to the Cathedral's parvis, where the Archbishop imparts the Eucharistic blessing to the entire city. This is the culminating moment of the day, when the community of Ancona gathers around the sign of the Eucharist.

A Spiritual and Civic Heritage

More than a simple rite, Corpus Christi in Ancona represents an identity event that unites the religious and civic dimensions. The procession involves the city's parishes, associations, and confraternities, and each year the Archbishop entrusts particular intentions to the community's prayer, from world peace to the care of the most vulnerable.

Temporary traffic modifications will be implemented in the affected streets for the procession's passage, as indicated by the Local Police.
