The Eucharistic solemnity in the heart of Ancona, from the Cathedral of San Ciriaco
The Eucharistic Procession of Corpus Christi is one of the most deeply rooted religious events in the life of the Municipality of Ancona, the capital of the Marche Region. The solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, celebrated on the Sunday following the Holy Trinity, finds its most solemn expression here in the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, the Romanesque cathedral that dominates the gulf and the port of Ancona from the top of Guasco hill.
The program begins with the Holy Mass presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Ancona-Osimo, accompanied by a homily and, in some editions, the conferral of ministries and mandates to the faithful of the Diocese. At the end of the celebration, the Eucharistic procession begins: the Most Holy Sacrament, carried in exposition under a canopy, descends from the Cathedral and winds through the streets, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and the faithful in prayer.
The route winds through the streets and stairways connecting the Cathedral hill to the lower city, before returning to the Cathedral's parvis, where the Archbishop imparts the Eucharistic blessing to the entire city. This is the culminating moment of the day, when the community of Ancona gathers around the sign of the Eucharist.
More than a simple rite, Corpus Christi in Ancona represents an identity event that unites the religious and civic dimensions. The procession involves the city's parishes, associations, and confraternities, and each year the Archbishop entrusts particular intentions to the community's prayer, from world peace to the care of the most vulnerable.
Participating in Corpus Christi is also an opportunity to discover Ancona from above: the ascent to San Ciriaco offers one of the most evocative views of the Adriatic Sea, between the port, the Arch of Trajan, and the Mole Vanvitelliana. Temporary traffic modifications will be implemented in the affected streets for the procession's passage, as indicated by the Local Police.
The Corpus Christi 2026 solemnity in Ancona took place on Thursday, June 4, in the Cathedral of San Ciriaco. The Holy Mass at 6:00 PM was presided over by Archbishop Mons. Angelo Spina, who in his homily invited attendees to place the Eucharist at the center of Christian life. During the celebration, some ministries were conferred upon faithful of the Diocese.
At 7:15 PM, the Eucharistic procession began, which from the Cathedral proceeded along the Scalone Nappi, Piazza del Senato, and Via Papa Giovanni XXIII, before returning to the Cathedral's parvis, where the Archbishop imparted the Eucharistic blessing to the city, with a thought for world peace.
