A centuries-old rite in the heart of the Castelli Romani

The Dead Christ Procession is the most anticipated event of Good Friday in Albano Laziale, located in the heart of the Castelli Romani, in the province of Rome. Every year, as evening falls, the historic center of this Lazio town gathers around a procession of profound spiritual intensity, renewing a devotion that has been rooted in the community for over two centuries. The procession is organized by the Sanctuary of the Most Precious Blood under the patronage of the Municipality of Albano Laziale.

The origins: San Gaspare del Bufalo and the Most Precious Blood

The tradition has its roots in the early 19th century, when in 1821, Canon Gaspare del Bufalo founded a house for the Missionaries of the Most Precious Blood in Albano, opposite the Church of San Paolo. Since then, the missionaries have continuously spread the spirituality of the Most Precious Blood of Christ, and the Good Friday Procession has become its most vivid popular expression. The bond with the Archconfraternity of the Most Precious Blood, established at the beginning of the century, has preserved the meaning and solemnity of the rite over time.

The parade and the Sacred Representation

The procession begins at the Sanctuary of San Gaspare del Bufalo, at the Church of San Paolo in Piazza San Paolo, and winds through the streets of the center: Via Aurelio Saffi, Corso Matteotti, Via Cairoli, Piazza Pia, Largo and Via Murialdo, before returning to Piazza San Paolo. The parade is accompanied by the town band and choir, while numerous costumed figures advance along the route: Roman centurions, knights, and the actor portraying Jesus carrying the cross, together with the bearers of the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows.

The highlight is the Sacred Representation of the Passion, held on the churchyard of the Church of San Paolo: an intense re-enactment of the final moments of Christ's life that moves attendees every year. At the end, the Bishop imparts a blessing with the relic of the Holy Cross.

The Dead Christ Procession is not just a religious rite, but a moment of identity that brings together the faithful from all the Castelli Romani. The stage sets, curated each year by the population and ecclesiastical authorities, reconstruct the Passion and death of Christ, while the period costumes lend the parade a solemn and ancient charm. It is an opportunity to rediscover the spirituality of Holy Week and, at the same time, the historical and cultural heritage of Albano Laziale, in Lazio.
