The widespread cultural festival bringing Caserta and Casertavecchia to life in winter
Comunalia - A Winter of Authors is a widespread cultural festival promoted by the Municipality of Caserta and produced by Fabbrica Audiovisiva Napoletana. From January to March, it transforms the city and the nearby medieval village of Casertavecchia into one large stage, with a program that intertwines music, theater, visual arts, folk traditions, sports, and nature. It is a shared journey that celebrates the historical, architectural, and social heritage of the capital of the Province of Caserta, in Campania, offering the public opportunities for gathering, reflection, and participation during the winter months.
Music is one of the festival's main threads. The inauguration takes place on the eve of Epiphany in the Cathedral of Caserta, with a concert that combines 18th-century repertoire for guitar and strings with the area's historical memory. In the following months, the city's churches and art spaces host classical music concerts, ranging from guitarist Pietro Condorelli to flute and guitar duos, and the sounds of the Napoli Nord Big Band.
The program gives ample space to theater and live performance, with events ranging from Pirandellian repertoire to popular Neapolitan comedy. There is no shortage of traveling parades and theatrical incursions that involve families and children through the streets of the center and the alleys of the village, especially during the Carnival period.
Alongside the performances, Comunalia offers photography exhibitions set up in city spaces and the evocative living nativity scene of Casertavecchia, spread throughout the courtyards and gardens of the village. Folk traditions and local history are also explored in conferences and meetings dedicated to the city's heritage.
The festival also looks to sports and the environment, with the Caserta Relay Race and trekking on the Tifatini Mountains inviting visitors to rediscover the landscape around the city. The grand finale coincides with the Spring Festival in Casertavecchia, two days that transform the medieval village into a vibrant, shared space filled with craft markets, music, and activities for children.
All Comunalia events are free of charge. The widespread culture format brings events to different locations, from the Cathedral to the Circolo Nazionale, from city churches to the village of Casertavecchia, offering residents and visitors a new way to experience Caserta and its territory during the winter.
The 2026 edition of the Comunalia - A Winter of Authors festival enlivened Caserta and the village of Casertavecchia from January 5 to March 31, with a dense program of free events promoted by the Municipality of Caserta. Classical music, theater, comedy, photography exhibitions, a living nativity scene, sports, and nature accompanied the city throughout the winter, leading up to the grand finale on March 28-29 with the Spring Festival in Casertavecchia.
Caserta is easily accessible by train thanks to the railway station, which is well-connected to Naples and major cities. By car, you can arrive via the A1 motorway (Caserta Nord or Caserta Sud exit). The village of Casertavecchia is located a few kilometers from the center, on the slopes of the Tifatini Mountains, and can be reached by car or local transport links.
All festival events are free of charge. For some indoor events, booking is recommended until capacity is reached.
The program and updates are published on the official portal of the Municipality of Caserta.
