The music and performing arts series by the Saverio Mercadante Orchestra in Altamura
As the mild weather arrives, the Cine Teatro Mangiatordi in Altamura, nestled in the heart of the Alta Murgia in the Province of Bari, becomes the stage for Componimenti di Primavera, a music and performing arts series promoted by the Saverio Mercadante Orchestra Association. Each year, the program brings great voices, poetic and theatrical tributes, celebrations of Italian song, and surprising guest ensembles to the stage, with all performances starting at 9:00 PM.
The association is named after Saverio Mercadante, the great 19th-century composer born in Altamura, and carries on his musical legacy, placing this town at the center of the Apulian cultural scene. The artistic direction, led by maestros Rocco Debernardis and Michele Mirabella, crafts a journey that weaves together classical music, singer-songwriter performances, theater, and storytelling, always with a keen eye on the audience and the local territory.
The festival is more than just a concert series: it is a multidisciplinary hub where music engages in dialogue with the spoken word and theater. Events range from tributes to the great figures of Italian culture to vocal ensembles, unconventional orchestras, and intimate author-led evenings.
Attending an evening at Componimenti di Primavera is also a perfect opportunity to discover Altamura, a city famous for its Federician Cathedral, its renowned DOP Altamura bread, and the Alta Murgia National Park. The series is part of a broader calendar of initiatives by the orchestra that accompanies the city throughout the year, spanning the Province of Bari and the entire Puglia region.
The 16th season of music and performing arts by the Saverio Mercadante Orchestra enlivened the Altamura spring with a diverse program that combined music, theater, and storytelling. Following the inauguration on March 13 dedicated to Totò, the festival presented the refined vocal quartet Italian Harmonists, the EROMA project, and the unusual ukulele orchestra Sinfonico Honolulu, concluding on May 14 with a sold-out evening. The artistic direction of Rocco Debernardis and Michele Mirabella confirmed the event's dual vocation—both popular and classical—firmly rooted in Altamura and the Alta Murgia territory.
Inaugural evening dedicated to Prince Antonio de Curtis, known as Totò, with narration by Michele Mirabella, soloist Marinunzia Perrone, and the Saverio Mercadante Quintet conducted by Maurizio Dones.
The vocal quartet Italian Harmonists featuring tenors Andrea Semeraro, Giorgio Tiboni, Luca Di Gioia, and Michele Mauro, bass Sandro Chiri, and pianist Jader Costa.
A musical project with Francesco Loporchio, Luciano Buttiglione, and other musicians, featuring vocals, guitars, and percussion.
Italy's first and largest ukulele orchestra reinterprets international rock and pop hits from the 1950s to the present in an acoustic version. Admission 5 euros.
The festival concluded with the final event on the program, which was a sell-out at the Teatro Mercadante.
All performances began at 9:00 PM at the Cine Teatro Mangiatordi.
