Christmas in Ariano Irpino told by the little ones, amidst ancient crafts and the flavors of Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Unlike many Christmas re-enactments that rely on adult actors, the Children's Living Nativity in Ariano Irpino puts the parish children at the center. They are the ones who portray the Holy Family, the shepherds, the angels, and the artisans of the Bethlehem imagined by local popular tradition. The initiative, promoted by the Don Bosco Oratory with the support of the San Pietro and Sant'Agostino Parish, has a strong educational value: the children are accompanied by educators and volunteers, bringing a message of sharing, peace, and hope to families, citizens, and visitors from neighboring towns.
The route winds along Via Guardia, in the center of Ariano Irpino, which for an afternoon transforms into a narrative path. Lights, scenery, and traditional costumes evoke ancient atmospheres and the trades of the past: the baker, the carpenter, the spinner, the blacksmith. Recitations, songs, and dialogues mark the stages of the performance, which concludes with the arrival at the Nativity hut. It is a family-friendly setup, designed to be walked through calmly and on foot, suitable even for the youngest children.
Alongside the performance, you will find the Market of Hope, where you can purchase charity gifts and artisanal products. The proceeds support local charitable initiatives and social projects: a concrete way to link the religious festival to a dimension of solidarity, which is deeply rooted in Irpinian parishes.
The Ariano living nativity does not forgo the table, which is an integral part of the Christmas tradition here. Along the route, tasting points are set up with local specialties:
These are simple flavors that tell the gastronomic identity of upper Irpinia better than any shop window.
Ariano Irpino does not have just one living nativity: the tradition multiplies in the districts and parishes of the vast municipal territory. Animated performances by children have also been held in the Tesoro area, with the San Giuseppe Parish, and in the past in Valleluogo and the ancient Sambuco village. The result is a sort of widespread nativity scene that, between the end of December and Epiphany, brings together the different souls of the Ariano community.
Situated at over 700 meters above sea level in the Apennines, on the border between the province of Avellino and Puglia, Ariano Irpino is one of the most important centers in the hinterland of Campania. Known for its ceramics, wine, and historic center spread over three hills, the city experiences Christmas with a density of events rare in the area: artistic nativity scenes, markets, and sacred performances. The children's living nativity, with its simplicity, is perhaps the one that best captures the community spirit of the Municipality of Ariano Irpino.
Those arriving from outside will find an authentic event, free of charge and devoid of tourist artifice. Those who live in Irpinia rediscover a ritual that accompanies the childhood of generations. In both cases, the experience lasts just over an afternoon but remains one of the most beautiful ways to understand how Christmas is experienced in the villages of the Campanian Apennines.
As of the publication date of this page, no official announcement has been released regarding the 2026 edition of the Children's Living Nativity of Ariano Irpino. This is a normal situation for this event: the appointment is usually made known by the Don Bosco Oratory and the San Pietro and Sant'Agostino Parish only close to the holidays, usually in the second half of December.
Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect a performance along Via Guardia, in the late afternoon of a Saturday in December, with the usual Market of Hope and tasting points for typical Irpinian products. However, none of this information is yet confirmed by the organizers: we recommend checking the parish channels before planning your visit.
By car: take the Grottaminarda exit on the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, then the SS90 road for about 20 km until you reach Ariano Irpino. From Naples, the journey takes about an hour and a half; from Foggia, just over an hour.
By train: Ariano Irpino station on the Benevento-Foggia line, connected to the city center by urban buses; however, the rail service is limited, especially on public holidays.
The route develops along Via Guardia, near the Don Bosco Oratory, in the center of Ariano Irpino (83031, province of Avellino). The area is flat and accessible to strollers and people with reduced mobility.
Admission is free. In recent editions, the performance has started in the late afternoon, around 4:30 PM - 5:00 PM, to take advantage of the effect of the lights as darkness falls.
