The historic carnival of Porto Ceresio, with allegorical floats and King Gigio on the lake
The Ceresio Carnival is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in Porto Ceresio, a town overlooking Lake Lugano (Ceresio) in the province of Varese. With its numerous editions, it is a historic event that every winter draws crowds of visitors from all over the Varese area and nearby Switzerland, transforming the town into a large open-air theatre.
The highlight is the grand parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, which winds through the town centre amidst music, choreography, and colours. Leading the festivities are the traditional masks of King Gigio and his Queen, symbols of the Porto Ceresio carnival. For the occasion, the town's main streets are closed to traffic, becoming a pedestrian zone entirely dedicated to the celebration.
Alongside the main parade, the programme reserves a special space for the youngest attendees with the Children's Carnival, which has also reached numerous editions. Games, entertainment, and shows make the celebration family-friendly, confirming the event's popular and inclusive nature.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Porto Ceresio with the involvement of institutions, associations, and many volunteers, the Ceresio Carnival is the result of great collective work. For those visiting Lake Lugano during carnival season, it is an unmissable opportunity to experience a vibrant and spectacular tradition in a natural setting of rare beauty in the province of Varese.
The 2026 edition of the Ceresio Carnival, the 46th, enlivens Porto Ceresio on February 14 and 15. Saturday, February 14, is dedicated to the 30th Children's Carnival, while Sunday, February 15, features the grand parade of allegorical floats with King Gigio and his Queen.
