Four days of celebration, music, and devotion in Bagnaturo di Pratola Peligna
The Celestinian Summer is a vibrant new festival that brings the village of Bagnaturo to life. Situated between the municipalities of Pratola Peligna and Sulmona in the heart of the Peligna Valley, province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo), the event is hosted at the Bagnaturo Sports Field as a community celebration that unites popular entertainment, spirituality, and local heritage.
The festival's name pays homage to Pietro da Morrone, the hermit of the Peligna Valley who became Pope under the name Celestine V. The event is promoted by the Associazione Celebrazioni Pietro da Morrone, with the patronage of the Diocese of Sulmona-Valva and the municipalities of Pratola Peligna and Sulmona, reflecting the deep-rooted devotion that has characterized these Abruzzese lands for centuries.
The Celestinian Summer offers a diverse lineup designed for the entire community: evenings of comedy and live music, tribute band performances, activities for younger guests such as pony games and mountain bike races, fireworks displays, and an intense concluding religious ceremony. All events are free of charge, in keeping with the festival's inclusive and community-focused spirit.
Set in a rural landscape just a few kilometers from Sulmona, the festival is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the village of Bagnaturo and the Peligna Valley, amidst local traditions, warm hospitality, and regional flavors. The collaboration between associations, civil institutions, and religious bodies makes the Celestinian Summer a defining event for the entire Peligna area.
The first edition of the Celestinian Summer was held from July 2 to 5, 2026, at the Bagnaturo Sports Field, achieving a level of success that exceeded the organizers' expectations, with sold-out evenings and visitors arriving from all over the Peligna Valley.
The festival opened on Thursday, July 2, with a comedy show by Uccio De Santis, which was met with a huge turnout. On Friday, July 3, the afternoon was dedicated to the "Carosello a Cavallo" with pony games and first-time riding experiences for children, followed in the evening by a concert from the Latin Lover tribute band, honoring Cesare Cremonini and Lunapop, and a closing DJ set.
Saturday, July 4, began with the San Celestino Bike Gymkhana, a mountain bike race for children, followed by a 90s and 2000s-themed musical show, concluding with a low-noise fireworks display. On Sunday, July 5, the grand finale featured a Mass presided over by Monsignor Michele Fusco, Bishop of Sulmona-Valva, and a final concert by Dik Dik, a historic group of Italian pop music.
Organized by the Associazione Celebrazioni Pietro da Morrone with the patronage of the Diocese of Sulmona-Valva and the municipalities of Pratola Peligna and Sulmona, the event offered all activities free of charge, establishing itself as a new landmark for the Peligna Valley summer.
