Medieval historical reenactment and fire of the fortress at Caneva Castle
Perched on the foothills of the Pordenone area, Caneva Castle overlooks the town and the plain below. Every year, at the beginning of summer, this historic site becomes the stage for Castello in Festa, one of the most cherished and long-standing medieval historical reenactments in Friuli Venezia Giulia, capable of transporting the entire community back in time.
The event stages a complete reenactment with participants in period costumes. The medieval days bring the village to life with artisans demonstrating ancient crafts, theatrical performances, musicians, and jesters. The heart of the competition between the districts is the Palio dei Borghi, a test of strength and skill that ignites rivalry and cheers from the neighborhoods.
The most spectacular moment is the "Notturno Castellano" (Castle Night), featuring the fire of the fortress: a pyrotechnic display that illuminates the castle at night, accompanied by fire shows and concerts. It is the iconic image of the festival, eagerly awaited by thousands of visitors who come to Caneva each year to witness it.
Castello in Festa is also a tribute to local products. The absolute star is the Figo Moro da Caneva, the local black fig protected as a Slow Food presidium and De.Co. (Denominazione Comunale), celebrated alongside Caneva wines and traditional dishes at the "Banchetto Medievale" (Medieval Banquet) and in the food stalls. Organized by the Associazione Pro Castello (Pro Castello Association), the event also offers an artisan market, guided tours, activities for children, and a shuttle service, in a festival that combines history, culture, and taste.
The 63rd edition of Castello in Festa will bring Caneva (PN) to life in June 2026, spanning multiple days between June 5th and 14th within the castle grounds. Organized by the Associazione Pro Castello, it offers a complete medieval historical reenactment, shows, typical gastronomy, and the promotion of the Figo Moro da Caneva.
The detailed timetable will be published by the Associazione Pro Castello in the weeks preceding the event.
Getting there: Caneva (PN) can be reached from the A28 motorway (Sacile Ovest exit); the castle area is served by a shuttle during the event.
Admission: check procedures and tickets for the main evening events on the official channels. Market and daytime activities generally have free admission.
