The historic Volkswagen Beetle gathering in Morcone, in the Sannio region of Benevento
Bug's Weekend is the event that every summer transforms Morcone, a village of just over four thousand inhabitants perched at an altitude of 600 meters in the Province of Benevento, into the Campanian capital of the Volkswagen Beetle. For an entire July weekend, the rounded sedans, camper-converted vans, and various evolutions of the "Bug" arrive from all over Campania and half of Italy, lining up on the grass and restoring to the village an atmosphere suspended between the Sixties and Seventies.
The event was not born from a marketing office but from the enthusiasm of a group of guys from the Piana district, who in 2005 decided to gather their Beetles under the shade of a tree, over a sandwich and some workshop stories. Since then, the formula has not changed: no speed races, no glossy catwalks, just the shared passion for a car that has passed sixty years of life and continues to make those who cross it on the road smile. Edition after edition, word of mouth among clubs and enthusiasts has done the rest, bringing the gathering to its twenty-first edition in 2026 and turning it into a small cult event in the Italian vintage calendar.
The headquarters is the "parulo" green area, the lawn that opens up next to the Church of the SS. Addolorata, dominated by a historic oak tree that offers shade to the cars and their owners. It is here that the gathering takes the form of an open-air museum: one moves from one hood to another, opening front trunks, commenting on restorations, impossible-to-find spare parts, and trips made with air-cooled engines. The atmosphere remains deliberately informal: as the organizers remind us every year, the gathering is not reserved only for Beetle owners and is also open to those who arrive just out of curiosity, to photograph the cars, or to spend a different kind of evening.
Around the vehicles, a side program has grown that aims to recreate a distinctly retro aesthetic. In recent editions, the weekend has offered:
Bug's Weekend is not an event for collectors only: the green area hosts a space dedicated to inflatables for children, and the lawn, shade, and market stall setup makes the visit comfortable even with children. Many visitors arrive simply on foot from the center or nearby districts to take a stroll among the cars in the late afternoon, when the warm light of the Sannio region enhances the polished bodies.
The Municipality of Morcone is one of the most scenic villages in the Sannio region of Benevento: stone houses leaning against the slope of Mount Mucre, uphill alleys, the remains of the castle, and the many churches that mark the medieval fabric, on a site already frequented in the Samnite era. The town is also known for its famous winter Presepe nel Presepe (Nativity in the Nativity) and for the Upper Tammaro Fair, and is located a short distance from Molise and the archaeological area of Sepino. Going to Bug's Weekend therefore means combining the gathering with a day of visiting an authentic village in the Campanian hinterland, far from the most beaten tourist circuits.
Those who love historic cars will find in Morcone a concentration of Beetles difficult to see elsewhere in Southern Italy, often preserved or restored with obsessive care. Those who are not experts will still find a village weekend made of music, food, colors, and chatter, with that retro taste that makes Bug's Weekend one of the most recognizable summer events in the Province of Benevento.
On the weekend of July 18 and 19, 2026, Morcone, in the Sannio region of Benevento, hosted the 21st edition of Bug's Weekend, the gathering of Beetles and Volkswagen derivatives born in 2005 from the initiative of a group of friends from the Piana district. The meeting place, as per tradition, was the "parulo" green area, under the historic oak tree next to the Church of the SS. Addolorata.
Again this year, the event was open to everyone, not just Beetle owners: alongside the exhibited vehicles, the program offered vintage markets, street art and painting performances, live music and DJ sets, burlesque shows, and a charming drive-in, as well as stands with beer and local specialties. An inflatable area was set up for the little ones, confirming the family-friendly and informal vocation of the gathering.
The gathering took place over two days in the "parulo" green area, in the Piana district, with free exhibition of Beetles and vintage Volkswagen vehicles throughout the weekend. The attractions announced by the organizers:
The exact times of individual appointments were not released in public announcements: activities were concentrated from the afternoon until night on both days.

By car: the SS 87 Sannitica state road has an exit dedicated to Morcone; the town can be reached in about an hour from Benevento (about 50 km) and a little more from Campobasso. From the A1 or A16 motorways, continue towards Benevento and then along the SS 87 towards Molise. By train: the Benevento-Campobasso line serves the Morcone Scalo station, but the service is currently limited and tourist-oriented: it is better to use a car or bus. Parking: dirt spaces and areas along the road near the gathering are used; it is advisable to arrive early during the central hours of Saturday.
Available sources do not indicate an entrance fee: the gathering takes place in an open area and is explicitly open to everyone, enthusiasts and the curious. Food at the gastronomic stands and purchases at the markets are paid. Those who wish to exhibit their vehicle are invited to contact the organizers in advance through the event's social media channels.
