About Borgo Montenero Living Nativity

At the gates of the Circeo National Park, the Borgo Montenero Living Nativity transforms Piazza IV Ottobre into a small Bethlehem every year. As evening falls, over a hundred local volunteers bring to life scenes of daily existence and ancient crafts from two millennia ago, amidst a play of light and shadow that envelops the village streets. An intense and evocative re-enactment of the Nativity, organized by the San Francesco d'Assisi Parish together with local associations, in the heart of the Pontine Plain in the province of Latina.

A village that becomes Bethlehem

During the Christmas season, at sunset, Borgo Montenero โ€” a hamlet of the Municipality of San Felice Circeo, in the province of Latina โ€” transforms into a little Bethlehem. The San Francesco d'Assisi Parish, in collaboration with other local associations, sets up the sacred representation of the Living Nativity in Piazza IV Ottobre: over a hundred performers, all local volunteers, recreate scenes of daily life and artisanal activities from two thousand years ago, at the time of Jesus' birth.

The atmosphere of the performance

The village square is wrapped in a magical atmosphere, created by plays of light and shadow that accompany the living tableaux. The audience follows a route among shepherds, artisans at work, and meticulously detailed settings, leading up to the Nativity hut. It is an event that renews the charm of live performance every year, as noted by the local press, offering authentic emotions to both adults and children.

Borgo Montenero and the Pontine Plain

Borgo Montenero is one of the foundation villages built in the 1930s during the reclamation of the Agro Pontino, nestled in the countryside on the edge of the Circeo National Park. This setting makes the living nativity particularly evocative: the religious re-enactment intertwines with the identity of an agricultural community gathered around its square and parish, in one of the most fascinating corners of the Lazio coast, between the Circeo promontory and the reclaimed lands.

The scenes and ancient crafts

The heart of the event lies in the living tableaux that reconstruct life from two thousand years ago:

  • period workshops and artisanal activities, brought to life by the performers;
  • scenes of daily village life, with shepherds and families;
  • the procession of traditional characters leading to the Nativity grotto;
  • the arrival of the Three Wise Men on the evening of Epiphany.

The nativity in the Circeo Christmas program

The Borgo Montenero Living Nativity is one of the highlights of the San Felice Circeo Christmas calendar โ€” "Christmas at Circeo: lights, flavors, and winter magic" โ€” which brings the historic center, the village, and the Circeo National Park to life with concerts, markets, illuminations, workshops for children, and guided walks in the Park. The event is also highlighted by the Circeo National Park Authority among the initiatives of the Christmas season.

Why visit

Attending the living nativity is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Pontine province off the beaten path, breathe in the spirituality of Christmas in a unique rural setting, and at the same time, visit San Felice Circeo, one of the most beautiful locations in the Lazio Region, with its historic center, promontory, and the beaches of the Circeo National Park.
