About Bergamo Film Meeting

For over forty years, the Bergamo Film Meeting has brought the best of international auteur cinema to the city, far from the spotlights of major commercial festivals. A week of screenings, retrospectives, tributes, and meetings that transform Bergamo's cinemas into a meeting point for cinephiles, directors, and enthusiasts from all over Europe. Competitions for feature films and documentaries, sections dedicated to animated cinema and European heritage, masterclasses with directors: an event in March that showcases cinema as an art form and as a perspective on the world.

The auteur cinema festival in Bergamo

The Bergamo Film Meeting is one of the longest-running and most appreciated film festivals in Italy. Founded in 1983, every March it fills the cinemas of the Orobic capital with a selection of around 170 titles including feature films, documentaries, short films, and archive films, almost always in their national premiere. It's not a festival of red carpets and stars: it's a festival for those who love cinema as a language, research, and memory.

Sections

The heart of the event are the two competitions: the Official Competition, dedicated to feature fiction films, and Visti da Vicino (Seen Up Close), reserved for documentaries. Alongside these are historical and in-depth sections:

  • Europe, Now! — the best of contemporary European auteur cinema;
  • major retrospectives and tributes to masters of world cinema;
  • animated cinema, one of the festival's most beloved traditions;
  • Kino Club, screenings dedicated to schools.

A festival spread throughout the city

Screenings take place in various cinemas in Bergamo, animating the city's cultural fabric for nine days. The film program is complemented by masterclasses, meetings with directors, screenings with live musical accompaniment, and the Film Industry Meetings, two professional days dedicated to the themes of distribution and innovation in the audiovisual sector.

A reference point for Lombardy

Organized by Bergamo Film Meeting Onlus, the festival is now a fixed event on the cultural calendar of Bergamo and Lombardy, attracting audiences and industry professionals from all over Europe. Its focus on accessibility and inclusion, with initiatives designed for audiences with specific needs, makes it an event open to all.
