Masks, allegorical floats, and the tradition of the Zingarella in the Fortore area of Benevento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Baselice Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events in the upper Fortore, the hilly area that borders the province of Benevento to the northeast, in Campania. In a village of just under two thousand inhabitants, perched at over 600 meters above sea level, the Carnival is not a staged tourist event: it is a festival the village prepares for itself, with costumes sewn at home, floats built in garages and agricultural sheds, and the town square becoming a stage for an entire afternoon.
The heart of the event is the masked procession. The meeting point is Piazza Convento, the traditional gathering spot for years, usually in the early afternoon, around 3:00 PM. From there, individual masks, organized groups, and allegorical floats travel through the town streets accompanied by music and a continuous shower of confetti and streamers, until they reach the municipal gym, where the party can continue indoors: a very practical choice, as the late winter cold is still felt at these altitudes.
As in many Sannio carnivals, the parade in Baselice also has a competitive dimension: at the end of the evening, the best mask, costumed group, and allegorical float are awarded prizes. This is the moment that fuels weeks of preparation, as families, neighborhoods, and local associations work hard on their disguises, and the friendly rivalry between groups is part of the fun.
Alongside the parade, a more ancient and theatrical carnival tradition survives in Baselice: the Zingarella. It is a popular performance that evokes the atmosphere of the 1950s, built around the figure of the 'little gypsy girl' who animates the square with a procession of characters, while the actors are offered food and drinks. Revived, for example, in the 2023 edition, it is one of those forms of peasant theater that have resisted depopulation in the Fortore and that tell, better than any museum, how people celebrated even before the arrival of papier-mรขchรฉ floats.
The Municipality of Baselice is located in the Fortore area of Benevento, a short distance from the borders with Puglia and Molise, in a landscape of ridges, oaks, and wheat fields. It is a land of quality agricultural production: it is here that the Moscato grape is grown, from which a passito wine known as Zingarella is produced, a sign of how deeply rooted that name is in the local identity. Those who arrive for the Carnival have the opportunity to discover a part of inland Campania that is off the beaten path, with its hill-country cuisine based on handmade pasta, cured meats, and cheeses.
The Baselice Carnival is organized by the Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality and takes place on the Sundays of Carnival or in the days near Shrove Tuesday, therefore between February and early March depending on the liturgical calendar. It is a free-entry event, designed primarily for children and teenagers but attended by all ages: for many returning emigrants, it is also one of the few occasions of the year to find the village full of people.
No official communication has been identified for the 2026 Baselice Carnival: neither the Municipality of Baselice nor the Pro Loco have published dates, times, or programs, and the village does not appear in the lists of carnivals in the province of Benevento released by the local press and UNPLI for 2026.
Previous editions took place on a Sunday during the carnival period, with the gathering of masks in Piazza Convento around 3:00 PM, a parade of costumed groups and allegorical floats through the streets of the center, and arrival at the municipal gym, where the final awards were presented. It is reasonable to expect a similar structure, but no details are confirmed.
Those who wish to participate can follow the social media channels of the Pro Loco Baselice and the Municipality, or contact the town hall on Via Santa Maria to verify if the event will be held.
Baselice is most easily reached by car: from the SS 212 of the Val Fortore, which connects Benevento to San Bartolomeo in Galdo, continue on the provincial roads towards the village. It is about 50 km from Benevento and just over 60 km from Campobasso. The reference railway station is in Benevento, connected to the Fortore by provincial bus lines with limited service, especially on Sundays. The most convenient airports are Naples-Capodichino and Bari-Palese.
The Carnival parade is traditionally free and open to the public: there is no ticket required to watch the procession or for the party in the municipal gym.
Baselice is located at an altitude of over 600 meters, and temperatures remain low in late winter: heavy clothing and comfortable shoes are necessary, as the procession takes place outdoors and on sloping streets. During the parade, the town center is partially closed to traffic, so it is advisable to park in the areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot. For updated dates and times, it is useful to follow the social media pages of the Pro Loco Baselice and the Municipality, or call the town hall directly.
