The oldest living Via Crucis in Basilicata, where the Passion of Christ meets Arbëreshë culture
In Barile, an Arbëreshë village in the Vulture region of Potenza province, Good Friday is the most anticipated day of the year. Here, one of the oldest living Via Crucis in Basilicata takes place, with origins dating back to the 17th century, where the Passion of Christ intertwines with Arbëreshë cultural roots, passed down through generations.
The sacred representation involves over a hundred volunteer participants, dressed in meticulously crafted period costumes. Alongside the Gospel figures – priests, apostles, holy women, Pharisees, Christ and the Madonna, centurions on horseback – parade the characters that make this Via Crucis unique: the Gypsy Woman and her Maidens in rich attire and jewelry, the Moor and the Young Moor, the Three Marys (young girls in white), and the thirty-three maidens in purple dresses.
The presence of the Gypsy Woman, with her gold and lavish clothing, is one of the most characteristic and studied elements of Barile's tradition: a figure from Arbëreshë popular culture that coexists with the sacred dimension of the procession, giving the event an enigmatic and deeply identity-driven charm.
Organized by the Pro Loco Barile, the Via Crucis unfolds in the afternoon through the streets of the historic center, attracting visitors from all over Basilicata and beyond. It is the culmination of a long ritualistic journey that, in Barile, begins on March 19th with the bonfires of Saint Joseph and spans the entire Lenten period, culminating in the representation of the Passion in the Vulture village.
In 2026, the historic Barile Via Crucis takes place on Good Friday, April 3rd, organized by the Pro Loco Barile. The sacred representation, one of the oldest in Basilicata, animates the historic center in the afternoon with its procession of over a hundred participants and the characters that make it a unique ritual, suspended between Christian faith and Arbëreshë culture.
