About August 1st in Frosolone

August 1st is the symbolic festival of Frosolone. Hand-built allegorical floats by local groups parade through the town streets, depicting episodes and characters from local history through theatrical scenes and papier-mâché. In the afternoon, at the Church of San Rocco, the rite of the Perdonanza is renewed with a mass and procession; in the evening, the entire village gathers for the fried cod and pepper festival, the famous 'peperuol e baccalà'. A deeply felt event that kicks off the Frosolone summer.

The festival that opens Frosolone's August

August 1st is the most anticipated day of the year in Frosolone, a Bandiera Arancione village in the province of Isernia (Molise). A community festival that blends devotion, spectacle, and gastronomy, and which every summer attracts visitors from all over Italy.

Allegorical Floats

The heart of the day is the parade of allegorical floats, a tradition born in the seventies. Local groups hand-build the floats using various techniques—from masonry to papier-mâché—to represent Frosolone's customs, traditions, scenes of popular life, ancient rites, and beliefs, creating true itinerant theatrical performances. The procession starts from Corso Vittorio Emanuele and ends in Piazza Alessandro Volta.

The Rite of the Perdonanza

In the afternoon, starting from 4 PM, the Church of San Rocco hosts the penitential celebration, Holy Mass, procession, and the ritual 'passages' of the Perdonanza, a moment of strong religious and identity value for the community.

The Festival: Pepper and Cod

The evening is dedicated to the cod and pepper festival, the 'peperuol e baccalà'. The cod is prepared in batter according to an ancient recipe, while the peppers are sautéed in a pan with only extra virgin olive oil. A simple and tasty combination that has become an iconic dish of the festival.
