The Flower Festival, the fair, and the floral float of the Ascension in the village of Mogliano
In the village of Mogliano, in the province of Macerata, the Ascension festival is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when the entire village dresses in flowers. For four days, the streets of the historic center, the avenue of the Sanctuary of the SS. Crucifix, and Via Roma become the stage for a tradition that combines devotion, ephemeral art, and community celebration. Artistic designs made with petals, paper flower arrangements hanging along the main street, the floral tribute from children, and the adorned float of the procession make this festival an identity-defining event for the people of Mogliano and for the entire Macerata region.
The festival has its roots in the 17th century. The Sanctuary of the SS. Crucifix was opened for worship in 1641 precisely on the occasion of the Ascension and obtained the privilege of plenary indulgence from Pope Innocent X. Around the sanctuary, in the adjacent fields, a small market came to life: this is the distant origin of today's Ascension Fair, which still enlivens the village streets. Faith, commerce, and popular tradition have thus intertwined for centuries, shaping the festival that Mogliano celebrates every year.
The artistic heart of the event is the Flower Festival: along the Sanctuary's avenue and Via Roma, petal designs and floral carpets are created by the Confraternity of the SS. Sacrament, local associations, and citizens. To this tradition are added numerous paper flower arrangements, the result of patient work by many volunteer hands, which are hung along the main street, transforming the village into a true floral town.
The Ascension in Mogliano is a participatory and widespread festival: children with their floral tribute, confraternities, local associations, and families are the protagonists. The final day, with the Holy Mass, the Eucharistic procession, and the floral float, brings the entire community together in a moment of strong spiritual and symbolic value. The fair, with its stalls in the historic center, completes the program, offering residents and visitors a day of tradition, craftsmanship, and local flavors.
Nestled in the rolling hills between the Macerata hinterland and the Sibillini Mountains, Mogliano is a village that preserves a rich heritage of traditions. Visiting the town during the Ascension means discovering the most authentic Marche, where the religious festival becomes an occasion for meeting, folk art, and hospitality. An experience that intertwines the spirituality of the Sanctuary, the beauty of the Flower Festival, and the warmth of a community that has gathered around its flowers for generations.
The 2026 edition of A Village in Bloom confirmed the strength of a tradition that is renewed year after year in Mogliano. The chosen theme, the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi's ascension into heaven, inspired the floral arrangements and the float for the Sunday procession.
The festival, organized by the Confraternity of the SS. Sacrament with the patronage of the Municipality of Mogliano and the collaboration of local associations, animated the historic center for four days with artistic petal designs, paper flowers hanging along the main street, and religious celebrations at the Sanctuary of the SS. Crucifix.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Mogliano (MC), along Via Roma and the avenue leading to the Sanctuary of the SS. Crucifix, with the floral tribute by children in Piazza Garibaldi.
By car: Mogliano can be reached from the SS77 of the Val di Chienti (exit towards Macerata) or from the Mare-Monti expressway. It is about 25 km from Macerata and about thirty kilometers from the Adriatic coast.
By train: the nearest station is Macerata, then connected to Mogliano by bus.
Access to the Flower Festival, decorated streets, the fair, and religious celebrations is free.
The best times to admire the floral designs are Saturday evening, during the creation of the Flower Festival, and Sunday afternoon for the procession with the floral float. Wear comfortable shoes for walking along the village streets.
