In the heart of the historic center of Artena, a village perched in the Lepini Mountains within the Metropolitan City of Rome, an event unlike any other in the Lazio calendar lights up every September. The Artena Punk Festival is a night of free, self-managed live music that brings the independent scene and Do It Yourself culture to Piazza della Resistenza. No sponsors, no massive stages: just bands, amplifiers, and a community that organizes itself.

A grassroots event

The soul of the festival is the Circolo Arci «Montefortino 93», which, together with the VDT Crew, curates every edition with an entirely DIY approach, fueled by passion and collaboration. The name «Montefortino» recalls the ancient toponym of Artena, and the club has become a landmark for local counterculture over the years. The festival has grown with each edition, becoming a small late-summer classic capable of attracting fans from across the province and nearby towns in the Castelli Romani and the Colleferro area.

Music, self-production, and atmosphere

The heart of the festival is, of course, the concert: on the stage in Piazza della Resistenza, punk, hardcore, and alternative bands from Upper Lazio and beyond take turns, with a focus on emerging and self-produced acts. The evening, which is always free to attend, generally begins in the early evening and continues late into the night.

The Municipality of Artena is famous for its medieval stepped historic center, one of the few Italian villages still without cars in its ancient core, where goods are still transported by mule.
