The Animated Via Crucis - The Passion and Death of Jesus Christ is one of the most heartfelt events of Holy Week in Ariccia, an elegant town in the Castelli Romani area within the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the Lazio region. Every Good Friday, as evening falls, the historic center transforms into a large open-air stage where the community re-enacts the final moments of Christ's life in costume. This is not merely a theatrical performance, but a true Via Crucis experienced in prayer, capable of emotionally engaging both locals and visitors.

The route: from Galloro to Palazzo Chigi

The procession begins at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Galloro and winds along the Appian Way, which is closed to traffic for the occasion, crossing the ancient village of Ariccia. The final scenes of the crucifixion, the pietà, and the deposition take place in the monumental spaces of Palazzo Chigi, the historic residence overlooking the heart of the town. The public follows the entire path on foot, becoming an active part of a procession that unites faith, memory, and local identity.

The fourteen stations and live music

The performance retraces all fourteen stations of the Passion, from the Last Supper and the arrest in the Garden of Olives to the condemnation, the ascent to Calvary, and the death on the cross. Each scene is entrusted to costumed performers, accompanied by readings of Gospel passages. In recent years, the staging has been enriched with live musical interludes, such as a violin playing Schubert's Ave Maria during the meeting between Mary and her son, making the atmosphere of contemplation even more intense.

A community project

The event is organized by the Amici per Caso APS Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Ariccia and the collaboration of local parishes. Over a hundred people, including actors, readers, costume designers, and safety volunteers, bring the scenes to life: a collective effort involving residents of Ariccia and neighboring towns. For several editions, the role of Jesus has been played by Francesco Toni, praised for the intensity of his performance.

Ariccia and Holy Week

Included in the calendar of Easter re-enactments in the Castelli Romani, the Animated Via Crucis has become a tradition that attracts hundreds of spectators every year. For those visiting Lazio during the Easter period, it represents an opportunity to discover Ariccia, its Baroque center designed by Bernini, and its famous porchetta, blending the evocative power of popular faith with the charm of the village's historical and artistic heritage.
