About Ancona Opera Season

Every autumn, the "Franco Corelli" Teatro delle Muse in Ancona shines a spotlight on grand opera. The Opera Season, curated by the Fondazione Teatro delle Muse, brings new productions by renowned directors and conductors, with local orchestras and choirs, to the heart of the Marche capital. In 2026, the programme features Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore and a Mascagni double bill combining Cavalleria rusticana with the symphonic poem A Giacomo Leopardi.

Opera in the heart of Ancona

The Ancona Opera Season is the autumn appointment with melodrama that animates the "Franco Corelli" Teatro delle Muse, the main theatre of the Marche capital overlooking Piazza della Repubblica, a short walk from the port. Organized by the Fondazione Teatro delle Muse with the artistic direction of Vincenzo De Vivo, the season brings two new opera productions to the Municipality of Ancona, in the Marche region, entrusted to directors, conductors, and singers of national and international calibre.

The 2026 Programme

The 2026 edition revolves around two titles conceived as new productions for the theatre. The first is L'Elisir d'amore, Gaetano Donizetti's comic masterpiece, staged in October with direction by Giuseppe Dipasquale and conducted by the young Italo-Persian maestro Aram Kacheh. The second event, in December, is a Mascagni double bill pairing the famous Cavalleria rusticana with the symphonic poem with voice A Giacomo Leopardi, Pietro Mascagni's tribute to the great poet from Recanati: a dialogue between music and literature particularly significant for the Marche region, Leopardi's homeland.

Local Ensembles

The productions involve Marche musical ensembles, from the Orchestra Filarmonica Marchigiana (FORM) to the Coro Lirico Marchigiano "Vincenzo Bellini", confirming the link between the season and the region's artistic excellences. Each title is preceded by a preview dedicated to young people, part of an opera appreciation journey that includes listening guides and educational initiatives such as "Tutti all'Opera" (Everyone to the Opera).

A Historic Theatre

The Teatro delle Muse, named after the famous Ancona tenor Franco Corelli, is the most important theatre in the Marche region in terms of capacity and prestige. The Opera Season is part of the Foundation's broader programming, which in Ancona complements opera with drama, dance, and great symphonic music, contributing to the city's journey to be designated among the cultural protagonists of the region.

Why it's worth it

  • New productions with renowned directors and casts
  • A double bill linking Mascagni to the Marche poet Giacomo Leopardi
  • Local orchestra and choir in a historic theatre in the centre of Ancona
  • Previews and listening guides designed for a young audience
