About Alpini Festival

In March, Cassina Valsassina, a small town on the Valsassina plateau in the Province of Lecco, celebrates the 95th anniversary of the founding of its Alpini Group. Three days of celebrations combine remembrance, culture, and community: a choral review in the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, a theatrical performance based on 'The Sergeant in the Snow' by Mario Rigoni Stern, a historical exhibition on the First World War, and on Sunday, the parade, Holy Mass, and commemoration of the fallen, with the inauguration of a defibrillator in memory of Marco Frigerio.

95 Years of the Alpini Group

The Alpini Festival in Cassina Valsassina celebrates an important milestone in 2026: the 95th anniversary of the founding of the local Alpini Group. Cassina Valsassina is a small municipality on the Valsassina plateau, in the Province of Lecco, and for three days it rallies around the 'penne nere' (black feathers, referring to the Alpini's distinctive hat badge) in a celebration that combines remembrance, culture, faith, and community, in collaboration with the neighboring town of Moggio.

Choirs, Theatre, and Remembrance

The program opens with a choral review in the church of San Giovanni Evangelista, bringing together three local choirs: the Coro Valsassina of Cremeno, the Coro Futura of Lecco, and the Coro Voci nel Tempo of Cortenova. There is also theatre, with a performance based on 'The Sergeant in the Snow' by Mario Rigoni Stern, performed by Roberto Squinzi with musical accompaniment, staged at the Nuovo Teatro in Moggio. The backdrop is the historical exhibition on the First World War, 'L'inutile Lezione' (The Useless Lesson), set up in Piazza Teresio Olivelli.

Alpini Sunday

The highlight is on Sunday, with the parade from Moggio to Cassina Valsassina, the Holy Mass, and the commemoration of the fallen. On this day, a defibrillator (AED) is inaugurated in memory of Marco Frigerio, a concrete gesture of solidarity that testifies to the Alpini's spirit of service to the community. The festival concludes with a lunch for participants.

The Alpini Spirit in Valsassina

Organized by the Alpini Group of Cassina Valsassina with the patronage of the Municipalities of Cassina Valsassina and Moggio and the collaboration of the Pro Loco tourist association, the festival is much more than an association's anniversary: it is a moment of identity for the entire Valsassina plateau, where historical memory, Alpini values, and the bond with the Lecco mountains are renewed from generation to generation.
