About Remembering Giò

In Piozzano, on the hills of Alta Val Luretta in the province of Piacenza, the Walk through fields and woods Remembering Giò returns every spring: a recreational-motor walk open to all, non-competitive, inviting you to walk immersed in the nature of the valley. Organized by the Rio Canto Cultural Association, it offers routes of 6, 10, and 15 kilometers with start and finish at the Massimo Patroni Sports Field. A day of gentle sport, remembrance, and socialising, marked by the colours of the blooming broom and the flavours of typical Piacenza products.

A walk through the fields and woods of Val Luretta

The Walk through fields and woods in Alta Val Luretta Remembering Giò is a much-anticipated spring event in Piozzano, a small municipality nestled in the hills of the Piacenza Apennines, in the province of Piacenza and in Emilia-Romagna. It is a recreational-motor walk open to all, non-competitive, designed for those who love walking in nature without the pressure of the clock: you start when you want, within the opening hours, and proceed at your own pace, enjoying the scenery.

The routes

The event offers three routes of different lengths, suitable for every fitness level and age:

  • 6 km — the shortest route, ideal for families with children and for those seeking a relaxing walk;
  • 10 km — the intermediate route, with rolling hills and wooded sections;
  • 15 km — the longest loop, for more trained walkers who want to explore Alta Val Luretta thoroughly.

The start and finish are at the Massimo Patroni Sports Field in Piozzano, on Via Campo Sportivo. The routes wind through cultivated fields, badlands, and woods, in a hilly environment that in spring is tinged with the yellow of the blooming broom; along the way, association volunteers mark the junctions and staff key points of the route.

Remembrance, nature, and socialising

The walk was created as a moment of remembrance — the subtitle "Remembering Giò" refers to the memory of a person dear to the community — and over time has become a village festival that combines gentle sport, nature, and conviviality. At the finish line, participants find a refreshment point with fruit, water, and tea, while the day concludes with the typical flavours of Piacenza: bortellina (the classic savoury fritter of tradition), salami, and a glass of Ortrugo, the white wine of the Colli Piacentini. There are also awards for the largest groups, celebrating the spirit of participation.

Who organises it

The initiative is curated by the Rio Canto Cultural Association A.P.S., under the patronage of the Municipality of Piozzano and in collaboration with the Pro Loco. The event is certified by the FIASP Territorial Committee of Piacenza (Italian Federation of Amateur Sports for All), a guarantee of the quality and safety of the route. Edition after edition, the walk attracts hundreds of walkers from Piacenza and the surrounding valleys, confirming itself as one of the most beloved hiking events of the Piacenza spring.
