The traveling musical drama of Holy Week in the historic center of Sant'Arcangelo
There are many representations of Christ's Passion, but few choose to tell it from the Madonna's perspective. This is the original hallmark of the Via Matris of Sant'Arcangelo, in the province of Potenza: not the classic Via Crucis, but a journey that follows Mary's maternal grief in search of her Son, transforming the alleys of the Lucanian village into an open-air theater of popular faith.
The event is configured as a traveling musical drama, divided into several scenic tableaux that retrace the moments of the Passion. At its heart is a reinterpretation of the ancient 'Pianto dell'Addolorata', a traditional composition performed during Good Friday processions, here rendered with dramatic and musical force.
The procession begins in the Sant'Anna district, in the heart of the historic center, at 8:30 PM. From there, the procession moves from one tableau to the next, involving over a hundred participants from the community: a collective effort that spans generations and makes the Via Matris not just a spectacle, but a moment of collective identity. The dark streets, the torchlight, and the singing create an atmosphere of profound intensity, capable of moving even those who are not from the area.
Organized by the Comitato Via Matris (Via Matris Committee), the event is now a well-established appointment of the Lucanian Holy Week and is considered one of the most significant Easter expressions in Basilicata. It combines tradition, faith, and community identity, and is carefully preserved by those who, year after year, pass down the gestures, songs, and symbols of this local heritage. For the village of Sant'Arcangelo, it is both a religious rite and an occasion for hospitality, capable of attracting visitors and devotees from all over the region.
The 9th edition of Via Matris takes place during Holy Week 2026, with performances on March 28 and April 3. The start is set for 8:30 PM from the Sant'Anna district; the procession, with over a hundred participants, crosses the historic center in a sequence of scenic tableaux dedicated to the Passion as seen through Mary's sorrow. The organization is handled by the Comitato Via Matris.
The Via Matris is divided into several traveling scenic tableaux that retrace the Passion of Christ from the Madonna's perspective, accompanied by a reinterpretation of the 'Pianto dell'Addolorata'.
