Celebrating the black truffle of the Velino Valley in the Reatine Apennines

The Micigliano Truffle Festival is one of the most genuine gastronomic events of the summer in the Rieti area. It takes place in the small municipality of Micigliano, in the province of Rieti, Lazio: a few dozen permanent residents, a village clinging to the slopes of the Velino Valley, at the foot of the Terminillo massif. Here, the festival is not born from a tourist marketing operation, but from the real cycle of rural life: the black truffle grows in the woods surrounding the village, and the community celebrates it once a year when the summer season brings visitors to the Apennines.
The product at the heart of the event is the black truffle harvested in the valley's woods. Truffle hunting has always been part of the daily life of these places: once practiced with pigs, today with trained dogs, but with the same respectful spirit with which one walks through the woods in search of this precious fruit of the earth. It is knowledge passed down from generation to generation, which in Micigliano has never become a spectacle, but has remained a craft.
In the kitchen, the black truffle does not need complex preparations. The recipes offered during the festival are simple and intense, telling the story of traditional country cooking with very few ingredients:
Alongside the food stalls, the day includes moments of conviviality with music, stories of ancient crafts, and walks in the woods around the village. It is a way to give context to the product: those who participate do not just eat, but understand where what is on their plate comes from. The excursions in the surroundings allow you to discover a natural environment rarely frequented by mass tourism, among beech forests, streams, and paths that climb towards the peaks of the Velino.
Micigliano is just a handful of kilometers from Rieti and the Salaria road, yet it seems to belong to another dimension. The festival is the best occasion of the year to visit the village: the streets fill up, families return from neighboring towns, and the small historic center regains for a day the liveliness it had decades ago. Those looking for a large-scale event will be disappointed; those looking for an authentic experience of inland Lazio, however, will find exactly what they were hoping for.
A practical tip that applies to all one-day festivals: it is best to arrive early. The quantities of truffle available are necessarily limited, and the stalls close when supplies run out, often sooner than one might imagine.
The province of Rieti is one of the least known truffle-producing areas in Central Italy, squeezed media-wise between the Umbria of Norcia and the Marche of Acqualagna. Yet the woods of the Velino Valley and the Sabina have always produced high-quality black truffles, and various local festivals — from Stipes to Micigliano — keep the tradition alive. Participating in the Micigliano festival also means recognizing this still undervalued Lazio gastronomic heritage.
The festival returns to the Reatine village of Micigliano on the last weekend of July 2026, with the usual one-day format. The food stalls offer the dishes that identify the event — truffle cavatelli and truffle eggs — alongside cured meats, cheeses, and other typical products of the Lazio mountains, accompanied by selected wines.
Around the table, moments of conviviality that characterize the event develop: music, stories of ancient crafts related to truffle hunting, and walks in the woods surrounding the village. As it is a one-day festival, it is advisable to arrive early: the stalls close when supplies run out.
Micigliano can be reached by car from the SS4 Salaria, with a detour towards the Velino Valley: about 20 km from Rieti and just over 100 km from Rome. The reference railway station is Rieti, connected by local bus lines; however, direct connection to the village is not guaranteed on public holidays, so the car remains the most practical solution.
The village is small and parking areas are limited: it is advisable to arrive well in advance and leave the car in the areas indicated at the entrance to the town.
Admission to the event is free; dishes are paid for at the food stall cash desks with the usual popular prices of village festivals.
It is advisable to arrive early because the available truffle is limited. Wear comfortable shoes if you intend to participate in the woodland walks. To confirm dates, times, and any table reservations, it is appropriate to contact the organizers directly at +39 392 8567893.
Accommodation facilities are concentrated in Rieti and the Terminillo area, a short distance away, with farmhouses and mountain huts in the surroundings.
