Great drama in the historic heart of Macerata
The Lauro Rossi Theatre Drama Season is one of the most anticipated cultural events of autumn and winter in Macerata, the provincial capital in the heart of the Marche region. It takes place in the elegant 18th-century Italian-style hall of the historic city theatre, overlooking the central Loggiati area, and accompanies the public from October until spring with a programme that combines quality and variety.
The festival is organised by the Municipality of Macerata together with AMAT (Marche Association for Theatre Activities), with the contribution of the Marche Region and the Ministry of Culture. It is structured into two main sections: the Drama section itself and Finally Sunday!, the festival designed for families and children.
Each season brings some of the most beloved performers of Italian theatre and cinema to Macerata. The programme alternates brilliant comedy, contemporary dramaturgy, civic theatre, and dance, with shows often directed by leading directors. Alongside the evening performances, the theatre offers in-depth projects such as the Gente di Teatro (People of Theatre) meetings, where artists engage in dialogue with the audience, and the Scuola di Platea (Stalls School), dedicated to involving high schools.
The Lauro Rossi Theatre, named after the Macerata-born composer, is an architectural gem that is part of the rich heritage of historic theatres in the Marche region. Attending a performance also means immersing yourself in an atmosphere of yesteryear, among boxes and velvet seats, just a short walk from Macerata's main squares and monuments.
The Drama Season is the best way to discover Macerata's vibrant cultural life during the colder months, in a university city that also hosts the famous Sferisterio opera festival.
The season opened on 14 and 15 October 2025 with Coppia aperta quasi spalancata (Open Couple, Almost Wide Open) by Dario Fo and Franca Rame, starring Chiara Francini and Alessandro Federico, directed by Alessandro Tedeschi. A theatrical journey of ten titles and seventeen performances that enlivened the Lauro Rossi until the spring of 2026.
The family series featured La bottega dei giocattoli (The Toy Shop) (7 December), PerAria by Sosta Palmizi (22 February), and Il contrario di me (The Opposite of Me) (22 March).
Performances at 9 PM on weekdays and 5 PM on Sundays. Box office: tel. 0733 230735, online sales at Vivaticket.
