Show cooking at Largo San Pietro: two teams of chefs reinterpret the typical products of the Sannio region
The Flavor Challenge is the gastronomic event that brings the kitchen into the square of Pontelandolfo, a village of just under two thousand inhabitants in the Province of Benevento, in the heart of the Sannio hills and the inland Campania region. For two consecutive evenings, the town transforms one of its most characteristic spaces into a live cooking theater, where the flavors of rural tradition are reinterpreted with modern techniques and tastes.
The initiative stems from a collaboration with the Provincial Association of Chefs of Benevento, the Sannio delegation of catering professionals: a choice that says a lot about the event's approach, closer to a professional demonstration than a classic festival with stalls and long tables. You don't come here just to eat; you come to watch the cooking and have your say.
The event's headquarters is Largo San Pietro, one of the most evocative spaces in the center of Pontelandolfo. The appointment is set for 8:00 PM on both evenings: cooking stations are set up outdoors, the audience gathers around, and the competition proceeds before everyone's eyes, with the rhythm and tension of a real contest.
Two teams of chefs face off, engaged in a show cooking event that alternates technical moments, stories about the ingredients, and tastings. The formula is designed to be spectacular without becoming artificial: gestures, knives, pans, and words, in front of an audience that follows the birth of the dishes step by step.
The constraint imposed on the two brigades is clear: work with zero-kilometer ingredients and local typical products. It is a rule that makes sense in a territory like this, where a good part of the municipal area is occupied by olive groves, pastures, and cereal crops, favored by the fertility of the hilly soils.
The chefs' mission is to create original dishes capable of telling the story of Pontelandolfo's identity through a contemporary and innovative vision. Not a museum-like re-proposal of home recipes, therefore, but a reinterpretation: it is in this gap between memory and invention that the meaning of the Flavor Challenge lies.
The peculiarity of the event is the role assigned to the spectators: they contribute to choosing the winner, expressing their judgment on the creations presented during the two evenings. A simple mechanism that changes the temperature of the event, because those who arrive don't just stand and watch: they taste, evaluate, and vote. The result is a participatory atmosphere, halfway between a village festival and a gastronomic competition, where the rivalry between the two teams becomes a pretext to talk about the territory.
It is not just a competition, then: it is a true journey through flavors, traditions, and new ideas, with the declared goal of promoting local food and wine culture while offering a moment of gathering for citizens and visitors alike.
The Municipality of Pontelandolfo is located at about 510 meters above sea level, in an area where the terrain reaches over a thousand meters: a position that offers cool evenings even in June and wide panoramas over the Sannio hills of Benevento. The town's economy is historically agricultural, which explains the richness of its pantry: oil, cereals, vegetables, and fresh handmade pasta.
The name of Pontelandolfo is also linked to a dramatic page of Italian history: in August 1861, in the months following the Unification, the village was the scene of a violent reprisal by Piedmontese troops, remembered as one of the harshest episodes of that period. In the following decades, an important part of the population emigrated to North America and Australia, giving life to communities that still maintain a close bond with their town of origin today.
The Flavor Challenge is not an isolated episode in Pontelandolfo's calendar. The village also hosts Borgolandolfo — On the path of lost flavors, which reached its second edition in 2026, bringing food and wine, crafts, art, and live performances along the streets of the ancient center, and the Cavatello and Local Products Festival, dedicated to the local fresh pasta. Three different events that tell the same story: that of a small municipality in inland Campania that has chosen food as a key to making itself known.
For the 2026 edition, The Flavor Challenge occupied Largo San Pietro on the evenings of Saturday, June 6th, and Sunday, June 7th, with activities starting at 8:00 PM. The formula remained that of the show cooking: two teams of chefs working outdoors, in front of the public, with the task of reinterpreting zero-kilometer ingredients and local typical products into original dishes.
The initiative was born from the collaboration with the Provincial Association of Chefs of Benevento and served as an opportunity to promote the food and wine culture of the Sannio region, combining technical demonstrations by professionals with the direct involvement of spectators. The final verdict, in fact, was not entrusted only to a technical jury: the attendees also expressed their judgment on the creations of the two evenings, contributing to the choice of the winning team.
Access was free but with mandatory reservation, managed via an online form and WhatsApp: a choice linked to the limited number of seats available around the cooking stations set up in the square.
The two evenings were organized in collaboration with the Provincial Association of Chefs of Benevento. Free admission with mandatory reservation.
The event takes place in Largo San Pietro, in the center of Pontelandolfo (Province of Benevento, ZIP 82027), starting at 8:00 PM on both evenings.
The most convenient way to reach Pontelandolfo is by car: the village is located in the hilly hinterland of the Sannio area of Benevento and is connected by provincial roads to other towns in the area. The historic center is compact and can be walked entirely on foot, so it is best to park in the areas along the access roads to the town and continue on foot to Largo San Pietro.
Free admission, but with mandatory reservation: registration is done through the online form provided by the organizers or via WhatsApp at +39 06 8616 7204. As this is a show cooking event with limited seating around the cooking stations, it is advisable to book a few days in advance.
