A village-sized carnival
The Sumirago Carnival, in Sumirago in the province of Varese, stands out from all others for a choice that is as simple as it is original: instead of giant and cumbersome papier-mâché figures, the base for the allegorical floats are the small and iconic Apecars, the three-wheeled motor vehicles transformed by the imagination of the inhabitants. This is the hallmark of the event, capable of combining tradition and originality.
The travelling twist
In 2026, the carnival abandons the fixed route to become travelling: the festival visits the different hamlets of the municipality, with the aim of promoting the historic centres and local identities. The parade brings masks, music, and cheerfulness to the village streets, involving both adults and children.
Games, music, and carnival sweets
Each stop concludes with a celebration, featuring organized games, music, and the classic flavours of carnival: from fritters to typical sweets, with bar service and sandwiches. The event is organised by the Pro Loco and local associations, confirming the vibrancy of popular traditions in the Municipality of Sumirago and in Lombardy.
Sumirago Carnival — edition 2026
In 2026, the Sumirago Carnival inaugurates its new travelling format: the debut takes place on Saturday, February 21st, with the first stop in the hamlet of Quinzano. Over a thousand people invaded the village streets for the parade, a sign of the success of the decision to bring the festival to the hamlets.
The parade started at 2:30 PM, crossing the village streets - via Pertini, via 2 Giugno, via Perego, via Sant'Antonio, and via San Pietro - to conclude at the Quinzano oratory, the heart of the festival, with games, music, and classic carnival flavours.

Saturday, February 21st — Quinzano
- 2:30 PM — departure of the parade with allegorical floats on Apecars, along via Pertini, 2 Giugno, Perego, Sant'Antonio, and San Pietro
- Conclusion at the Quinzano oratory with organized games, music, and carnival flavours (fritters and typical sweets), with bar service and sandwiches
The new travelling format includes stops in the different hamlets of the municipality.
