In the festive calendar of the Sannio Beneventano region, the San Liberatore Patronal Feast holds a special place. Every year in mid-May, the municipality of Torrecuso—a hillside village in the Province of Benevento, Campania—dedicates several days to its patron saint, alternating liturgical moments in the parish with evening performances in the main square. It is a village festival in the truest sense: deeply felt by the locals and well-attended by visitors from neighboring towns, so much so that local press describes it as one of the most anticipated and popular events in the entire Sannio region.
Torrecuso honors San Liberatore on May 15th, alongside the village's other protectors, Sant'Erasmo and Sant'Antonio da Padova. The saint is also honored by a local church, the Church of San Liberatore in the San Giovanni del Monte area, built on two levels across different eras (15th and 17th centuries), while the village's main parish church is dedicated to Sant'Erasmo, dating back to the 13th century and housing paintings depicting the saint's martyrdom and Saint Philip Neri. In the days leading up to May 15th, the community prepares with prayers and parish celebrations; on the day of the feast, devotion becomes public with a procession winding through the streets of the historic center.
The heart of the festival's secular side is Piazza Antonio Mellusi, named after the poet and politician born in Torrecuso, remembered as the "gentle poet of Sannio." Here, for three or four evenings, a variety of genres take the stage: the brass band concert with its operatic repertoire remains the most traditional highlight, alongside comedy shows, pop and Neapolitan music groups, and concerts by nationally renowned artists. In past years, the square has hosted the Orchestra Stabile della Canzone Napoletana, rapper Shade, the group I Trementisti, I Gemelli di Guidonia, and comedian Antonio Manganiello.
As with many patronal feasts in inland Campania, the finale is entrusted to fireworks: at midnight on the final evening, the sky above Torrecuso lights up with a pyrotechnic display, one of the most photographed moments of the festival. In 2025, the fireworks were managed by the Pannella firm from Ponte, while the lighting installations were designed by Davide Iannella.
Visitors arriving for the festival discover one of the most interesting villages in the Sannio wine region. Torrecuso overlooks the Calore valley, with the Taburno massif in the background, and falls within the Taburno Camposauro Regional Park. The village, originally built for defensive purposes and passed through the centuries to the Fenocchio, Della Leonessa, Caracciolo, and Cito families, reached its peak between the 17th and 18th centuries. Must-sees include Palazzo Cito, an ancient three-towered castle transformed in the 18th century and now home to municipal offices; the 15th-century Church of the Santissima Annunziata with its three naves and Annunciation painting; and the contemporary art museum dedicated to wine, which houses over sixty works on wine culture. Torrecuso is, after all, one of the capitals of Aglianico del Sannio: at the end of August, the village hosts VinEstate, the festival dedicated to local wines, which completes the calendar opened in May by San Liberatore.
The festival takes place outdoors in the village center, so it is advisable to arrive early: the village streets are narrow, and parking near the square fills up quickly on concert nights. The detailed program—times, artist names, and the procession route—is usually released a few weeks in advance through the channels of the Municipality of Torrecuso, the parish, and the local Sannio press, as the secular lineup changes every year.
At the time of writing, no official program for the 2026 edition of the San Liberatore Patronal Feast in Torrecuso, Province of Benevento, has been published. The dates of the festivities and the lineup for the evenings in Piazza Antonio Mellusi have not been released by the sources consulted, so the information provided here should be considered indicative.
The only certain temporal reference is liturgical: San Liberatore is celebrated on May 15th, as happens every year in Torrecuso along with the other patrons, Sant'Erasmo and Sant'Antonio da Padova. In documented years, the festivities have extended over several evenings around that date.
A review of concerts scheduled in the Sannio region between May and September 2026 indicates a concert by Fausto Leali in Torrecuso, in Piazza Mellusi, on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:00 PM. The location and the period coincide with the usual ones for the patronal feast, but the text does not explicitly attribute the event to the San Liberatore festivities: the information is therefore reported only as a signal and not as a confirmed program.
Those wishing to attend can follow the channels of the Municipality of Torrecuso, the parish of Sant'Erasmo, and the local Sannio press, which normally publish the complete religious and civil program a few weeks before the event.
Torrecuso is located about ten kilometers from Benevento, on the slopes of Mount Taburno. By car, it can be reached via the roads connecting the provincial capital to the Valle Telesina; by train, the reference station is Benevento, from where you can continue via local bus connections or taxi.
The festivities are concentrated around May 15th, the feast day of San Liberatore, with several evenings of performances preceding and following the patron saint's day.
The events take place in Piazza Antonio Mellusi and the streets of the historic center; there are no ticket offices or advance bookings for the performances in the square.
For the updated program, you can refer to the channels of the Municipality of Torrecuso and the parish of Sant'Erasmo, as well as the local Sannio press.
