Devotion, music, and snails in Monticchio di Massa Lubrense
In Monticchio, a small hillside hamlet in the Municipality of Massa Lubrense, within the Metropolitan City of Naples, the end of June has always had the same flavor: that of land snails cooked in the square and the procession of Saint Peter, the village's patron saint. The Saint Peter's Feast and the Snail Festival are two sides of the same coin, an event that blends devotion, rural memory, and conviviality in the most authentic part of the Sorrento Peninsula.
The dish that gives the festival its name is the land snail, prepared according to recipes passed down from generation to generation. It is a humble cuisine, rooted in field work and the terraced gardens of the Lubrense hills: the snails are carefully purged, parboiled, and then seasoned according to family tradition. During the festival evenings, they are served in the square in various preparations, accompanied by other local gastronomic specialties and regional wines.
The heart of the festival is June 29th, the feast day of Saint Peter the Apostle. The day begins with morning masses and culminates in the solemn celebration in the late afternoon, followed by a procession carrying the saint's statue through the alleys and slopes of the village: Discesa Turro, Discesa Pontescuro, via Pontescuro, via San Rocco, via Turro Pastena, and via Severo Caputo, before returning to Piazza San Pietro, where the Massa Lubrense town marching band traditionally performs.
Alongside the religious events, there is a popular civil program organized by the hamlet's residents. The Snail Olympics are team games for children and teenagers, while the Three Saints' Palio and the tug-of-war competition pit the local districts against each other in a friendly village rivalry. The evenings continue with live concerts, group dances, dance school performances, and the unmissable lottery draw that concludes the festivities.
Massa Lubrense is the southernmost municipality of the Sorrento Peninsula, overlooking Capri and the Gulf of Naples, and is composed of numerous hamlets, each preserving its own patronal feast. Monticchio, with its church of Saint Peter the Apostle, effectively opens the summer calendar of Lubrense festivals, which continues with Pastena, Acquara, Termini, Torca, Schiazzano, and Marina della Lobra. In Campania, and particularly in this corner of the coast, the festival is not a tourist operation: it is a moment when the village reunites, when those who have emigrated return home, and when the elderly tell the younger generation what the feast was like in the past.
Those looking for the atmosphere of an authentic village festival, far from the crowded circuits of the coast, will find Monticchio an ideal destination: you eat well, dance in the square under the lights, and witness a deeply felt procession. It is also an excellent starting point for discovering the trails of Massa Lubrense, the bays of Marina della Lobra and Marina del Cantone, and the views over the gulf that make this part of Campania unique.
In 2026, the Monticchio community gathered around its patron saint from June 28 to July 1. The opening was dedicated to the youth, with the Snail Olympics for children born between 2013 and 2021 and the Three Saints' Palio followed by the classic tug-of-war competition.
On June 29, the feast day of Saint Peter the Apostle, the hamlet experienced its most intense moment: morning masses, the solemn celebration in the late afternoon, and the procession with the saint's statue through the village's slopes and alleys, returning to Piazza San Pietro. From then on, the square changed pace with three consecutive musical evenings and snail stands open every night.
The closing, on the evening of July 1, followed the usual script: live music and, at 11:30 PM, the lottery draw that puts the final touch on the festivities every year. The organization was handled by the parish led by Father Daniele, together with the festival committee and the Confraternity of the Most Holy Name of Jesus.
The festivities are concentrated in Monticchio, a hamlet of Massa Lubrense (province of Naples), around the church and Piazza San Pietro. The procession travels through the streets and slopes of the village.
By car: A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, exit at Castellammare di Stabia, then take the SS145 Sorrentina road to Sorrento and the provincial road to Massa Lubrense; from there, continue toward the hamlet of Monticchio. Parking spaces in the village are limited: it is advisable to leave the car along the main road and continue on foot.
By public transport: Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento, then a local bus to Massa Lubrense and its hamlets.
Organized by the Parish of Saint Peter the Apostle of Monticchio, together with the festival committee and the Confraternity of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. The updated calendar of festivals is published on the tourist portal of the Municipality of Massa Lubrense.
