About Saint Anthony's Bonfire

A century-old tradition in Varese, the Saint Anthony's Festival and Bonfire light up Piazza della Motta in mid-January. On the evening of January 16th, the city gathers around the large pyre built by the 'Monelli della Motta', on which citizens' wish notes burn. The following day, the festival continues with mass, the blessing of animals, and children releasing balloons, amidst food stalls and the aroma of 'salamelle'.

The bonfire that opens the year in Varese

The Saint Anthony's Festival and Bonfire are one of the oldest and most cherished traditions in Varese: a century-old event that every year, in mid-January, enlivens Piazza della Motta, in the heart of the historic center. The protagonists of the organization are the Monelli della Motta, who have been responsible for building the large pyre for generations.

The night of the bonfire and wishes

On the evening of January 16th, in the presence of city authorities and numerous Varese residents, the large bonfire assembled in the center of the square is lit. Among the flames burn the wish notes written by citizens during the day, according to a ritual that is renewed every year and gives the festival its most intimate meaning. Around, food stalls offer 'salamelle' and typical sweets like 'mostazitt'.

The blessing of animals

Saint Anthony Abbot is traditionally the protector of animals: for this reason, on the morning of January 17th, the festival continues with a solemn mass, the blessing of animals, and a moment dedicated to the youngest, with the release of children's balloons. The event also supports social initiatives in the city.

Varese and its square

The festival takes place in the Municipality of Varese, the capital of the Lombard province overlooking the Prealps. Piazza della Motta, formerly the site of the historic market, becomes the focal point of an entire community on this occasion.
