Music, dance, and traditional costumes from around the world in the heart of the Monti Cornicolani
The Sabino-Cornicolano International Folklore Festival is one of the longest-running folk events in the Lazio region. For over twenty-five years, every July, the small village of Sant'Angelo Romano—perched on Monte Pàtulo in the Monti Cornicolani, about thirty-five kilometers from Rome—has welcomed folk delegations from every continent. For three days, the streets of the historic center and the courtyard of the Castello Orsini-Cesi fill with traditional costumes, rhythms, colors, and diverse languages, creating a cultural exchange that has become the village's hallmark.
The festival is promoted by the Gruppo Folk "Monte Pàtulo," a historic association founded in 1977 in Sant'Angelo Romano and currently led by president Lamberto Croce. With accordions, tambourines, bagpipes, and flutes, along with twenty dancers in traditional dress, the group preserves the songs, dances, and re-enactments of Roman and Lazio traditions. Through international tours, they have brought Sabino-Cornicolano folklore to Europe and four other continents. The festival was born from the bonds forged during these travels: every summer, foreign groups are hosted in the village in an exchange of friendship that the Municipality of Sant'Angelo Romano strongly supports.
Each edition brings together an average of five or six international ensembles. In 2026, delegations arrived from Slovakia, India, Spain, Latvia, Ecuador, and Senegal, joined by Italian guest groups such as the Gruppo Folkloristico Norbensis from Norma. The previous year featured groups from Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Taiwan, and the Balearic Islands, with ambassadors and diplomatic representatives attending the final evenings. Performances alternate between courtship dances, ritual music, and festive choreography, presented to the public alongside stories of their respective traditions.
The well-established format runs from Friday to Sunday during the second weekend of July:
Beyond the music, the festival is a celebration of taste. The stalls offer specialties from the Sabino-Cornicolano area, ranging from fresh pasta prepared on-site by local cooks to traditional peasant dishes, such as the "Ojacciu e pizzicotti che cocenu" initiative dedicated to Sant'Angelo's culinary heritage.
Supported by the Municipality of Sant'Angelo Romano, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, the festival has become a defining event for the entire territory between the Sabina and the Monti Cornicolani. It is a showcase that combines the promotion of local heritage with a dialogue between peoples, in the spirit of peace and friendship. For visitors from Rome, it is also a perfect opportunity to discover one of the most charming villages in the province, with its castle and panoramic views of the Lazio countryside.
From July 10 to 12, 2026, Sant'Angelo Romano hosted the 26th edition of the festival, organized by the Gruppo Folk Monte Pàtulo led by president Lamberto Croce and presented by Matteo Pizzolorosso. Delegations from Slovakia, India, Spain, Latvia, Ecuador, and Senegal took turns on stage and in the village streets, alongside Italian guest groups such as the Gruppo Folkloristico Norbensis from Norma.
Friday was dedicated to local traditions, featuring the "Ojacciu e pizzicotti che cocenu" initiative at the Castello Orsini-Cesi and the official evening opening. Saturday saw tastings of local products followed by performances from international groups. Sunday featured the grand folk parade through the village, fresh pasta demonstrations, a concert by the "Medullia" band, and a grand finale with all groups, concluded by the mayor's farewells. A celebration of music, costumes, and folk traditions in the spirit of friendship and peace between peoples.
Sant'Angelo Romano is located about 35 km northeast of Rome, in the Monti Cornicolani. By car: take the Via Nomentana or Via Tiburtina to Mentana or Guidonia Montecelio, then follow signs for Sant'Angelo Romano; the recommended exit from the A1 motorway (Rome North branch) is Fiano Romano. By public transport: take Cotral regional buses from Rome (Ponte Mammolo) via Mentana or Guidonia.
Performances and the parade in the historic center are free; tastings and food at the stalls are available for purchase.
The heart of the festival is the courtyard of the Castello Orsini-Cesi and the village streets: arrive before the evening performances to find a seat and enjoy the food stalls. As these are outdoor evening events, bring a light jacket.
