About RUFA On Screen

RUFA On Screen is a film festival hosted at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila in Rome's Pigneto district, featuring audiovisual works by students and alumni of the RUFA - Rome University of Fine Arts. The three-day event offers free screenings of fiction shorts, animation, experimental works, and documentaries, alongside industry panels and awards designed to launch the next generation of Italian filmmakers.

RUFA On Screen: Young cinematic talent in Rome

RUFA On Screen is an audiovisual festival promoted by the RUFA - Rome University of Fine Arts and hosted at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, a historic venue in Rome's Pigneto district. The event brings works created by students and alumni of the Cinema, Film Arts, Computer Animation and Visual Effects, and Photography and Audiovisual courses to the big screen, providing new authors with a professional showcase and a bridge to the audiovisual industry.

A competition in three categories

The heart of the festival is a competition divided into three categories that reflect the diversity of contemporary cinematic language:

  • Fiction short films, highlighting the writing and directing skills of young authors;
  • Animation or experimental works, a space for visual research and new techniques;
  • Documentaries, offering unique perspectives on reality and the local territory.

The program is curated by a selection committee that reviews numerous submissions from students and alumni, ensuring a high-quality lineup that values both technical skill and storytelling ability.

Meetings, guests, and awards

RUFA On Screen is more than just screenings: the days are filled with meetings with industry professionals—directors, screenwriters, producers, distributors, and technicians—who engage in dialogue with the audience and the authors. Alongside the competition, the festival features non-competitive sections and in-depth sessions on film culture. Official awards, supported by production and distribution companies, include distribution contracts and opportunities to tour national and international festivals: a recognition that can launch a career.

The Nuovo Cinema Aquila and Pigneto

The choice of the Nuovo Cinema Aquila links the festival to a symbolic location of Rome's cultural and independent scene. Pigneto, a neighborhood dear to the memory of Pasolini, is today one of the city's most vibrant hubs for cinema, music, and visual arts: the perfect setting for an event that focuses on emerging languages and the dialogue between generations of authors.

Why attend

With free admission subject to availability, RUFA On Screen is an opportunity open to all film enthusiasts, industry professionals, and anyone looking to discover the talents who will shape the Italian cinema of tomorrow. An intense three-day event that combines viewing, training, and networking in the heart of Rome.
