Edition 2001 — Premio Avezzano

Before its 2026 return, the Premio Avezzano had halted in the early 2000s after twenty-six editions. The long historic season of the exhibition, which began in 1949, had hosted nationally and internationally renowned artists over the years, such as Mario Schifano, Luigi Veronesi, Getulio Alviani, Pino Pascali, and Mauro Reggiani, contributing to the formation of the Civic Art Gallery of Modern Art of Avezzano.

The historic legacy of the Premio

Before the twenty-five-year suspension, the Premio Avezzano had held twenty-six editions starting in 1949, establishing itself as a reference point for visual research in Central-Southern Italy. Throughout its various editions, the exhibition hosted some of the protagonists of Italian art in the second half of the 20th century, including Mario Schifano, Luigi Veronesi, Getulio Alviani, Pino Pascali, and Mauro Reggiani.

A significant portion of the works collected over the years has become part of the Civic Art Gallery of Modern Art of Avezzano, testifying to the role of the Premio as a tool for shaping the city's cultural heritage. This long historic season was only reopened in 2026, with the 27th edition at the Orsini-Colonna Castle.
