Pietracamela, the Abruzzo capital of climbing
Every summer, among the stone alleys and medieval houses of Pietracamela—one of Italy's most beautiful villages, perched over a thousand meters high on the Teramo side of the Gran Sasso—the Climbing Festival takes center stage. Established in 2016 by the ASD Mondi Verticali, the event has become the premier summer gathering for the sport climbing community in Abruzzo, drawing athletes, enthusiasts, and curious visitors from across the region and beyond.
Three days between cliffs and street bouldering
The competitive heart of the festival is the lead contest, a rope climbing competition held on the famous Falesia degli Aquilotti, the historic cliff overlooking the village with routes ranging from 6c to 8a. This is complemented by street bouldering, which turns the walls, arches, and alleys of the historic center into an open-air gym where climbers of all levels challenge themselves on routes set among the houses. There are also highline sessions, with lines tensioned above the village rooftops.
More than just a competition: vertical culture and village festivities
The Climbing Festival is much more than a competition. The evenings in Piazza degli Eroi, the heart of the town, are animated by talks and screenings featuring prominent figures in mountaineering and climbing, followed by live music and DJ sets. Throughout the weekend, there are activities for everyone: climbing trials and workshops for children, orienteering, yoga, and outdoor excursions on the trails of the Gran Sasso, alongside photography exhibitions dedicated to the mountains.

The food and wine area set up in the village offers typical products from the Teramo area and mountain cuisine, accompanying the days of sport with the conviviality typical of village festivals. The intimate and authentic atmosphere of Pietracamela, combined with the charm of the Gran Sasso spires, makes the event an experience that blends sport, nature, and community.

Supported by the CAI of Pietracamela subsection and the outdoor network of the Municipality of Pietracamela, in the province of Teramo, the Climbing Festival is also an opportunity to showcase the village and its extraordinary natural heritage, promoting active and respectful mountain tourism in one of the wildest areas of the Central Apennines.
Climbing Festival — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of the Climbing Festival in Pietracamela, in the province of Teramo, is expected as every year during a weekend in July at the foot of the Gran Sasso. As of now, the organizers of ASD Mondi Verticali have not yet published the official dates or the detailed program. Maintaining the format of previous editions, the event is expected to feature the lead contest on the Falesia degli Aquilotti, street bouldering in the alleys, activities for children, talks, screenings, and live music. Getting there
Pietracamela can be reached by car from the A24 motorway (exit Assergi or Colledara-San Gabriele), then following the road that leads to Prati di Tivo. The nearest train station is Teramo, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
Admission and registration
Participation in the square activities, screenings, and concerts is generally free; registration for the competitions (lead contest and street bouldering) takes place at the desk set up in the village. Tips
