Four days of devotion, music, and a funfair in the Rione Libertà district of Benevento

Benevento is a city of districts, and each one has its own saint. In Rione Libertà, the neighborhood stretching beyond the Calore river towards Via Napoli, the most anticipated event of the year is the Patronal Feast of Maria Santissima Addolorata, which centers around the liturgical memorial on September 15th. This is not a manufactured festival, but a grassroots celebration that has grown around the Parrocchia della Santissima Addolorata: the committee of faithful goes door-to-door months in advance to sell raffle tickets, the streets are adorned with artistic illuminations, and for four days, Piazzale Aldo Iermano and Via Girolamo Vitelli transform into the neighborhood's open-air living room.
The devotional aspect is the true core of the festival and begins long before the evening shows, with the novena in the parish church. The days follow a set rhythm: morning mass, recitation of the rosary, Via Matris in the late afternoon, evening mass, and the "Goodnight to Mary" moment at night. The highlight is the solemn celebration presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benevento, followed by the procession of the Addolorata statue through the district streets, accompanied by a brass band and the participation of local confraternities and families. In recent editions, the procession has passed through Via Bonazzi, Via Cosentini, Via Napoli, Via Santa Colomba, Via Cardone, Via Del Pozzo, Via Columbro, and Via Pennella, with traffic closed by the Municipality of Benevento for the occasion.
The stage set up in the square in front of the church hosts a variety of genres, with a clear preference for Campanian folk music: dance orchestras, brass bands, cover bands, neomelodic singers popular in the Sannio region and the province of Naples, DJ sets, and cabaret shows featuring comedians known from television. There is also entertainment for children and, on the final night, the midnight fireworks display that concludes the festivities. Recent years have seen performances by artists such as Leo Ferrucci, Simone Schettino, and the New Orchestral Samnium.
A signature element of the festival is the funfair installed on Via Benedetto Bonazzi, behind the ARPAC offices, which remains active throughout the festivities: rides, bumper cars, shooting galleries, and stalls selling nougat and brittle. Traditionally, the final evening features a promotional offer on rides, which is highly anticipated by families. The other unmissable event is the parish raffle draw, held at the end of one of the final masses: the proceeds support the festival's expenses and the parish's charitable works.
The festival takes place in the Municipality of Benevento, the capital of the Province of Benevento, in Campania. Visitors from outside the region can combine the festival with the discovery of a city that is layered with history and still relatively untouched by mass tourism: the Arch of Trajan, the Roman Theatre, the Church of Santa Sofia with its Lombard cloister (a UNESCO World Heritage site on the "Longobards in Italy" itinerary), and the Hortus Conclusus by Mimmo Paladino. The Sannio region is also a land of fine white wines, from Falanghina del Sannio to Greco, and a rustic gastronomy featuring fresh pasta, cured meats, and Benevento nougat.
The Addolorata Feast of Rione Libertà returns in 2026, but the detailed program is not yet public. As per tradition, the event revolves around the September 15th anniversary, with the novena in the parish, the solemn mass presided over by the Archbishop of Benevento, the procession of the Addolorata statue through the district streets, and several evenings of entertainment in the square in front of the church.
The exact dates, names of the artists, and times are communicated each year by the Parrocchia della Santissima Addolorata and the festival committee, usually at the beginning of September, and are reported by the local Sannio press. The traffic management plan by the Municipality of Benevento, including closures for the procession and the Via Bonazzi funfair, is also published only a few days before the event. We recommend checking for updates on the parish's channels.
By train: Benevento Centrale station is a short distance from Rione Libertà and can be reached on foot or by local bus. By car: A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Benevento exit, then follow signs for the center and Via Napoli; from Caserta and Caianello, you can also arrive via the SS 372 Telesina.
Free access to all religious celebrations and performances in Piazzale Aldo Iermano. Only the attractions at the Via Bonazzi funfair and the parish raffle tickets require payment.
