The rite of the beacon for the patron saint, in the heart of Brianza
In the heart of Lecco's Brianza region, the village of Monticello Brianza, in the Province of Lecco, celebrates its patron saint Saint Agatha, whose feast day falls on February 5th. The parish church, dedicated to the saint, is the heart of a festival that intertwines the religious dimension with the community aspect.
The most evocative moment of the festival is the rite of the beacon, which accompanies the celebrations of the Martyrs, witnesses to the Christian faith unto extreme sacrifice. The symbolic gesture of fire โ a burning balloon โ represents life given entirely. Fire is understood as love (one must not be lukewarm) and as light, a visible sign of faith. A rite that recalls the martyrdom of Saint Agatha, an emblem of faith and love.
The liturgical heart of the festival is the solemn Mass, celebrated in the church dedicated to the patron saint, presided over by the parish priest and accompanied by other priests. The community gathers around this central moment, where the religious dimension merges with local identity and the civic unity of the town.
The Feast of Saint Agatha represents an important moment for both the church and the entire community of Monticello Brianza. Organized within the Pastoral Community of Saint Benedict the Abbot, the festival preserves an ancient tradition, capable of bringing the town together around the values of faith, memory, and belonging, in the heart of the Brianza winter.
In 2026, Monticello Brianza will once again celebrate its patron saint Saint Agatha. The saint's day falls on February 5th, while the solemn celebration is scheduled for Sunday, February 8th. The festival includes the solemn Mass in the church dedicated to the saint and the characteristic rite of the beacon, a symbolic gesture of fire that recalls the martyrdom of Saint Agatha.
The detailed program will be announced by the Pastoral Community of Saint Benedict the Abbot closer to the festival.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the Pastoral Community. Based on the established tradition, the festival includes:
