The sacred representation of Good Friday in the historic center of Monte San Pietrangeli
The Passion of Christ in Monte San Pietrangeli, a small village in the province of Fermo in the Marche region, is the oldest and most heartfelt religious representation in the town. Born from popular devotion linked to the coffin of the Dead Christ kept in the town, the re-enactment is presented every year on the evening of Good Friday by the organizing committee, established in 1976. In 2026, the event will reach its 48th edition and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the association that has made it one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the Marche territory.
For one evening, the entire historic center transforms into a Roman-era Jerusalem. Over 300 participants, dressed in costumes sewn by the association's tailors and faithful to the models and fabrics of the time in Palestine, bring the scenes of Jesus' passion and death to life. The representation starts from the Church of Saints Lorenzo and Biagio and winds through the main street and alleys of the ancient village.
What makes the Passion of Christ unique is the meticulous staging: a skillful play of lights, hundreds of colored glass lanterns illuminating the village streets, and musical accompaniment entrusted to Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem. The result is a highly evocative liturgy for adults and of strong educational value for the younger generation. The event is sponsored by the Regional Council of Marche.
The 2026 edition, scheduled for Friday, April 3rd at 9:00 PM, is enriched by initiatives for the half-century of activity of the committee. From March 29th to April 11th, 2026, the San Giovanni Cultural Center hosts the photographic exhibition 50 Years of Passion of Christ, a journey through images retracing the history of the re-enactment and the participation of entire generations of Monte San Pietrangeli residents.
The Passion of Christ is not just a show: it is a moment of strong collective identity that involves the entire municipality, from children to the elderly. The preparation of costumes, the staging of scenes, and the attention to detail are the result of the voluntary work of hundreds of people, who every year renew a tradition that unites faith, history, and popular participation.
The 2026 edition, the 48th, celebrated the 50 years of the committee founded in 1976. On Friday, April 3rd, from 9:00 PM, over 300 participants brought the historic center to life with the trial before Caiaphas and Pilate, the Via Crucis, and the Crucifixion in front of the Church of Saints Lorenzo and Biagio.
From March 29th to April 11th, the San Giovanni Cultural Center hosted the photographic exhibition 50 Years of Passion of Christ. The event, sponsored by the Regional Council of Marche, was accompanied by Verdi's Requiem and illuminated by colored glass lanterns.
