The living re-enactment of the Passion of Christ in the heart of Gravina
Every spring, the historic center of Gravina in Puglia, located in the heart of the Alta Murgia in the province of Bari, transforms into an open-air stage for one of the most evocative sacred re-enactments in Puglia: the Passio Christi. Over two evenings, more than 200 costumed performers bring the final hours of Jesus' life to life across alleys, squares, and natural landscapes, recreating the atmosphere of the Holy Land in 30 AD. This is not merely a procession, but a true itinerant theatrical performance that weaves together faith, art, and culture.
The strength of the Passio Christi lies in the scenographic use of Gravina's authentic spaces. The scenes unfold between Piazza Benedetto XIII, the Cloister of the Monastery of Santa Maria, the historic bridge, and the Madonna della Stella plateau, which overlooks the deep karst gorge that gives the city its name. The audience follows the procession of Roman soldiers, apostles, townspeople, and priests, immersed in a setting curated down to the smallest detail with torches, music, and period costumes.
The twelfth edition, scheduled for March 21 and 29, 2026, revolves around the figure of Longinus, the Roman centurion who, according to tradition, pierced the side of Christ and subsequently converted. The narrative is entrusted to the voice of the redeemed centurion, who guides the spectators through the stages of the Passion with an intimate and human perspective. Cristian Divella returns in the role of Jesus for his fourth and final year.
The Passio Christi was born in 2014 from the initiative of a group of friends and, in just a few years, has become a defining event for the entire Gravina community, supported by a dedicated association and a staff of over 30 people. The 2025 edition recorded approximately 20,000 visitors from every region of Italy, confirming the event as one of the most followed religious and cultural occurrences in the Province of Bari and all of Puglia during the Easter period.
Attending the Passio Christi means experiencing a collective event where popular devotion merges with the scenographic richness of one of the most fascinating villages in the Murgia. Admission is free, and the event is designed to welcome families, curious visitors, and enthusiasts of historical and sacred re-enactments.
The 12th edition of the Passio Christi chose the figure of Longinus as its central theme, the Roman centurion who, according to tradition, pierced Jesus' side and converted: the narrative was led in the first person by the redeemed centurion. Cristian Divella returned to the role of Christ for his fourth and final year. The free event involved over 200 costumed performers and a staff of more than 30 people, winding through the iconic sites of Gravina's historic center.
The second day was originally scheduled for March 28 and was postponed to March 29 due to adverse weather conditions.
Gravina in Puglia can be reached by car via the SS96 Bari-Altamura-Gravina road or from the Bari exit on the A14 motorway, continuing towards the Murgia hinterland. By train, the city is served by the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (Bari-Altamura-Gravina-Matera line). The main scenes take place in the historic center, around Piazza Benedetto XIII.
The event is completely free. The performances begin in the late afternoon: it is advisable to arrive well in advance to find a good spot along the route, especially in Piazza Benedetto XIII and near the Madonna della Stella plateau.
Wear comfortable shoes to follow the itinerant procession along the cobblestone paths of the historic center and bring a warm layer for the still-chilly March evenings.
