Three days of Gonzaga re-enactment with districts, taverns, and medieval competitions
In Isola Dovarese, in the Province of Cremona, the Palio is much more than a festival: it is a journey back in time that brings the town back to the splendor of the Renaissance, when this corner of the plain was linked to the lordship of the Gonzaga family. For three days, the splendid arcaded square, designed in the Gonzaga style, one of the most beautiful in Lombardy, transforms into a medieval and Renaissance stage enlivened by hundreds of costumed figures.
The heart of the event is the competition between the four districts of the town: San Giuseppe, Le Gerre, Porta Tenca, and San Bernardino. Three traditional and spectacular races determine the winning district: the cock race, the stilt race, and the ancient game of Magher. The competition is accompanied by historical parades, dances, flag-throwers, and drummers that fill the streets of the town.
During the three days, the town comes alive with medieval taverns - the Taverna del Viandante, the Taverna de li Sette Peccati, the Taverna dell'Aquila d'Oro, and the Taverna de la Tinca - where you can taste traditional dishes, as well as period markets with artisans and ancient crafts. Every evening, a themed show is staged, part of a narrative that runs through the entire event, culminating in a grand finale with fireworks.
The Palio of Isola Dovarese is one of the longest-running and most meticulously organized historical re-enactments in the Region of Lombardy, attracting visitors from all over the Po Valley every year. The attention to detail in the costumes, the authenticity of the taverns, and the natural setting offered by the Gonzaga-style square make it an unmissable event for lovers of history and traditions.
From September 11 to 13, 2026, Isola Dovarese hosts the 59th edition of its Palio, with a theme that continues the journey through the three days: "Navigatio Insulensis". The town in the province of Cremona transforms into a Gonzaga-style setting enlivened by hundreds of costumed figures, taverns, markets, and parades.
The four districts - San Giuseppe, Le Gerre, Porta Tenca, and San Bernardino - compete in the cock race, the stilt race, and the game of Magher. Every evening, a themed show is staged, culminating in the grand finale with fireworks on Sunday.
