Palio del Cero

On June 2, 2025, the historic center of Volterra provided the backdrop for a new edition of the Palio del Cero in Piazza dei Priori. The eight city districts faced off in the traditional test of strength around the tower topped with the candle, which is painted every year by a local artist.

The day, with free admission, was preceded by a historical pageant in Renaissance costumes featuring ladies, musicians, and the Volterra flag-wavers, in an atmosphere reminiscent of the ancient medieval celebrations where districts donated wax to the city's churches. The event underscored the identity and popular value of one of the most beloved re-enactments in the province of Pisa.
