The medieval historical re-enactment of the walled city of Castelfranco
The Palio del Castel d'Amore is the most important historical re-enactment in Castelfranco Veneto, in the province of Treviso. Established in 1997, it brings the medieval period of the late 12th century back to life, when the castle was built by the Municipality of Treviso as a fortified outpost. The event, held biennially, involves the city's districts and numerous associations dedicated to local history.
The heart of the re-enactment is the Historical Parade of the Consuls, with about six hundred costumed participants, alongside the ancient ball game, the siege of the fortress, tournaments, and knightly jousts. Flag-wavers and musicians accompany the days, while the medieval market reconstructs the commercial and artisanal life of the era within the walls and squares.
The Palio del Castel d'Amore is recognized by major historical re-enactment networks, including CERS, MarcastoriCA, and Veneto Storico. More than just a costume party, it is a collective effort of study and reconstruction that restores the walled city to the atmosphere of its medieval past, attracting visitors and enthusiasts from all over the region.
The 2026 edition of the Palio del Castel d'Amore marks the return of the medieval historical re-enactment of Castelfranco Veneto, after the 2025 edition was skipped. The official website indicates the event is in preparation ("Work in Progress").
The event will re-propose its established program, with the Historical Parade of the Consuls and its approximately six hundred participants, the ancient ball game, the siege of the fortress, the medieval market, flag-wavers, musicians, tournaments, and jousts. Precise dates and the detailed program will be announced by the Associazione Palio del Castel d'Amore.
The precise dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the Associazione Palio del Castel d'Amore: the official website lists the edition as "Work in Progress". The established structure of the re-enactment includes the Historical Parade of the Consuls with about 600 participants, the ancient ball game, the siege of the fortress, the medieval market, flag-wavers, musicians, tournaments, and knightly jousts within the walls and squares of the walled center.
Castelfranco Veneto is reachable by train (lines from Venice, Padua, Treviso, and Bassano del Grappa) and by car from the SR53 Postumia. The re-enactment takes place in the historic center and around the castle walls.
The event is held biennially. The detailed program for each edition is published by the Associazione Palio del Castel d'Amore closer to the event.
