Six weeks of illuminations, nativity scenes, an ice rink, and events in the historic center of Fondi
With White Christmas, the Municipality of Fondi, in the Province of Latina, stages its most ambitious Christmas program: not just a single event, but a calendar spanning over six weeks, from the switching on of the lights in late November through to Epiphany and beyond. The concept is that of a "diffused Christmas": squares, churches, cloisters, and urban parks become stops on a journey that visitors can curate freely, strolling between the medieval historic center and the lower city districts.
Fondi is one of the most underrated art cities in southern Lazio: dominated by the Caetani Castle and the village enclosed within the city walls, overlooking the lake of the same name and just a few kilometers from the seaside towns of Sperlonga and Terracina, it offers an intimate winter atmosphere that the illuminations enhance without altering its character.
The scenic heart of the program consists of several installations that remain active throughout the duration of the event:
Alongside the attractions, the calendar hosts events that the locals now recognize as their own: the inaugural concert in the Church of Santa Maria in Piazza, the Street Food Festival that accompanies the start of the festivities, the living nativity set up in the historic center by local associations, gospel choirs, the New Year's Eve Concert, the "Dear Santa" children's competition, and the "Libero de Libero" National Poetry Prize, named after the poet born in Fondi.
The most popular moment, however, remains the New Year's Eve party in the square: Piazza Matteotti becomes an open-air stage for a night of popular music and DJ sets, with nationally renowned guests chosen each year by the municipal administration.
White Christmas is promoted by the Department of Culture and Tourism of the Municipality of Fondi with the involvement of historic center associations, local schools, and commercial businesses. The stated goal is twofold: to revitalize local commerce during the most important weeks of the year and to extend the tourist season for a territory that primarily thrives on summer beach tourism, restoring the urban center as a collective gathering place even in the cold months.
The busiest days are the weekends in December, when markets, shows, and attractions are all running simultaneously. Those seeking a more intimate atmosphere can choose weekday afternoons to visit the nativity scenes in the cloister; families traveling with children will find the Winter Park and the ice rink to be the most suitable activities between Christmas and Epiphany. The program may be subject to change in case of adverse weather conditions: it is always advisable to check the Municipality's official channels before setting off.
The 2025-2026 edition of White Christmas opened on Friday, November 28, 2025, at 5:00 PM in Piazza IV Novembre, with the lighting of the illuminations accompanied by a gospel choir formed by students from the city's comprehensive schools, coordinated by Michelina Carnevale, and closed with a fireworks display. From that day until January 11, 2026, the center of Fondi hosted a continuous calendar of events.
The program was presented by the municipal administration led by Mayor Beniamino Maschietto, with councilors Vincenzo Carnevale and Stefania Stravato, as a tool to support historic center commerce and promote off-season tourism.
The organizers noted that the program was subject to change in case of adverse weather conditions.
By car: take the Frosinone exit on the A1 motorway and then the SS 637 towards Fondi, or the SS 148 Pontina from Rome (approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes). By train: Fondi-Sperlonga station on the Rome-Naples line via Formia, connected to the center by local buses. Nearest airports: Rome Fiumicino and Naples Capodichino.
Illuminations, markets, artistic nativity scenes, the living nativity, and concerts in the square are free to attend. There is a fee for the "Fondi On Ice" skating rink (hourly ticket including skate rental) and some attractions at the Winter Park.
The squares in the center are all within walking distance of each other: it is best to leave your car in the peripheral parking lots, especially on weekends and New Year's Eve. Wear warm winter clothing for evening outdoor activities.
