About MI_TO 150 Magretti

In 2026, it will be 150 years since the Milan-Turin, the oldest cycling race in the world, and Paderno Dugnano celebrates the anniversary with a grand historical re-enactment. The protagonist is Paolo Magretti, a naturalist and cyclist who won the first edition of the race in 1876, covering the route between the two cities by velocipede. Figures in period costume, historic velocipedes, philatelic exhibitions, and a commemorative ride through the municipalities north of Milan pay homage to an extraordinary personality and the history of cycling. An event that intertwines memory, sport, and culture.

MI_TO 150 Magretti

MI_TO 150 Magretti is the historical re-enactment with which Paderno Dugnano, a city in the metropolitan area of Milan, celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Milan-Turin (1876-2026), the oldest cycling race in the world still held.

Paolo Magretti, the cycling naturalist

At the centre of the event is the figure of Paolo Magretti, winner of the first edition of the Milan-Turin in 1876. At the time a student of Natural Sciences, Magretti covered the route between Milan and Turin by velocipede, taking over ten hours and thus entering cycling history. The connection with the territory of Paderno Dugnano makes the tribute particularly heartfelt.

The re-enactment

The event includes a commemorative ride with historic velocipedes and figures in period costume, starting from Cassina Amata and passing through the neighbouring municipalities of Senago, Limbiate, and Varedo. Accompanying the day are dedicated exhibitions: a philatelic exhibition with stamps inspired by Magretti and the exhibition 'Paolo Magretti: the naturalist on two wheels'. Four municipalities are involved in the initiative.

Memory, sport, and culture

MI_TO 150 Magretti is organised by the Municipality of Paderno Dugnano, in the province of Milan, as part of the celebrations for the anniversary of the Milan-Turin. More than just a sporting event, it is an occasion for historical and cultural enhancement, bringing to life a fascinating chapter in the history of Italian cycling and a multifaceted personality like Paolo Magretti.
