The village of Colle San Magno returns to the Middle Ages with historical re-enactments, fire shows, and a medieval market
On summer evenings, the small village of Colle San Magno, perched on the slopes of the mountains overlooking the Liri Valley in the province of Frosinone, sheds its modern skin to don the attire of the Middle Ages. The Medievalia Festival transforms the alleys, squares, and stairways of the historic center into an authentic medieval village, where the present gives way to camps, knights, and ancient workshops. It is one of the most heartfelt re-enactment events in the Ciociaria area, capable of attracting visitors of all ages from across the province and nearby Lazio.
The heart of the event is the historical re-enactment. Along the village streets, military camps come to life, where costumed participants showcase the daily life of soldiers, while battle re-enactments and sword duels take place in the squares. The historical pageant winds through the town, featuring ladies, nobles, commoners, and men-at-arms in a living fresco that recreates the atmosphere of centuries past.
As evening falls, the festival literally lights up: fire shows featuring fire-breathers and jugglers illuminate the village, accompanied by live music and roving performances. There are also demonstrations of arts and ancient crafts, with artisans reproducing traditional techniques before the public. The fantasy atmosphere, complete with knights and dragons, makes the event particularly beloved by children.
Accompanying the shows is the medieval market, with stalls offering handcrafted goods, themed items, and local products. The gastronomy of the Ciociaria region takes center stage with local specialties, allowing visitors to discover the flavors of this corner of southern Lazio in a picturesque setting.
Organized by the Municipality of Colle San Magno together with the APS Il Borgo association, the Medievalia Festival is designed as a shared celebration for the entire community, highlighting one of the most characteristic villages in the province of Frosinone. Free admission and a family-friendly atmosphere make it an ideal destination for a summer evening of history, tradition, and fun in Lazio.
