A day of music, traditions, and Irpinian flavors in Piazza Giovanni Falcone
Every May 1st, the Municipality of Paroliseโa village of just over six hundred inhabitants nestled on the ridge separating the Sabato and Calore valleys in the province of Avellino, Campaniaโcomes alive for one of the most popular days of the year. Piazza Giovanni Falcone becomes the stage for a free-entry public festival that begins at noon and continues until late at night, featuring food and wine stalls, live music, and street performances.
The event is organized by the Preziosissimo Sangue Festival Committee, the volunteer group that has for generations managed the village's main celebration: the Solemnity of the Most Precious Blood, held on the first Sunday of July and rooted in the devotion promoted in 1834 by the parish priest Don Marciano Marino. The May Day event was included in the program celebrating the 175-year history of the Confraternity: a way to extend the festivities beyond the religious calendar and involve the entire community in a public, open, and free event.
The common thread of the day is music in all its folk forms. In the early afternoon, the square and the alleys of the historic center fill with the Montemaranese tarantella and traditional Irpinian songs, in a roving format that accompanies lunch. Following this, live concerts, DJ sets, and performances take place, leading up to street performers and the fire show that kicks off the evening. The day concludes with dance music, with the crowd staying in the square until late at night.
The festival is not just for adults: in the afternoon, an area is set up for children with inflatables and cotton candy, allowing families to spend the entire day in the square. This is one of the aspects that makes the Parolise May Day an intergenerational event, where grandparents, parents, and children share the same space.
Parolise preserves a medieval historic center, featuring the 17th-century Church of San Vitaliano and the Clock Tower, as well as the stone portals of noble residences along Via Melfi. Visiting the village on May 1st means seeing it at its most vibrant: a crowded square, home-cooked food served outdoors, and a small community sharing its story through music. For those arriving from Avellino, just a few minutes away by car, it is the ideal opportunity for a day trip that combines hilly landscapes, gastronomy, and popular tradition.
The structure is well-established: stalls open at noon, roving music and lunch in the early afternoon, children's entertainment and an afternoon concert, a musical aperitif at sunset, street performances in the early evening, a main concert late at night, and a closing DJ set. Everything is concentrated in Piazza Giovanni Falcone, with no need for travel, all within a few dozen meters.
For the 2026 edition, the Preziosissimo Sangue Festival Committee created a continuous eleven-hour program, all concentrated in Piazza Giovanni Falcone. The opening of the food and wine stalls at noon kicked off the day, followed by roving music with the Montemaranese tarantella and folk songs that accompanied lunch in the square.
The afternoon alternated between the concert by I Rotarossa and the children's area with inflatables and cotton candy, continuing with a musical aperitif featuring a DJ set by Vinyl Gianpy. In the early evening, street performers and the La Dea del Fuoco show transformed the square into an open-air stage.
The highlight came late in the evening with the concert by Ritmo 90, dedicated to 90s hits, before the closing DJ set by Luca Frisetti. The edition was part of the calendar of celebrations for the 175-year history of the Confraternity of the Most Precious Blood, the association that enlivens the community life of the Irpinian village.
