About Living Via Crucis

Every three years, on Good Friday, Frassinoro transforms into a large open-air stage. Around 500 costumed participants bring to life the fourteen stations of the Via Crucis along the village streets, illuminated by over 15,000 torches. A tradition that has been renewed since 1906, making this re-enactment one of the most evocative religious-popular events in Emilia-Romagna, in the heart of the Modenese Apennines.

A village that becomes a theatre of the Passion

The Living Via Crucis of Frassinoro is one of the oldest and most evocative re-enactments of the Passion and Death of Christ in Italy. Every three years, on the evening of Good Friday, the small village of Frassinoro, perched on the Modenese Apennines in the province of Modena, is entirely transformed into an open-air theatre: the streets, alleys, and hamlets of the village give way to Sanhedrin and oriental stalls, while around 500 participants in costume embody the fourteen living tableaux of the Via Crucis.

A tradition renewed since 1906

The roots of the event lie in the deep religiosity of the people of Frassinoro. It all began with a mission conducted in June 1865 by the Passionist Fathers, after which the inhabitants founded the Pia Unione della SS.ma Croce e Passione di Gesรน Cristo (Pious Union of the Most Holy Cross and Passion of Jesus Christ), which became a confraternity in the early months of 1866 with about 800 members. From 1872, the procession of the dead Christ took place regularly every Good Friday, and between 1906 and 1918, the representation was structured into the fourteen tableaux according to the ecclesiastical format. Since 1952, the opening tableau dedicated to Jesus in the Garden of Olives was added, and the event gained national and international significance.

The atmosphere of the re-enactment

What makes the Via Crucis of Frassinoro unique is its static nature: the characters remain motionless in their tableaux while the pilgrims parade in procession, in silent prayer, stopping before each station. The route is illuminated by over 15,000 torches, creating a poetic and solemn atmosphere. The participants wear clothing conforming to Roman and Jewish traditions, and each station is meticulously detailed. The procession is accompanied by traditional songs performed by the parish choir, interspersed with readings from the Gospel.

Recognized heritage

Since 2023, the Living Via Crucis of Frassinoro has been part of Europassione per l'Italia, the association that brings together the oldest Italian Passion re-enactments, and efforts are underway for UNESCO recognition as intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The event, organized by a dedicated Committee chaired by parish priest Don Luca Pazzaglia, is considered one of the most important religious-popular expressions in Emilia-Romagna and attracts thousands of faithful and visitors from all over the region each edition.

The religious and cultural heart of the Apennines

The re-enactment takes place around the Abbey of Santa Maria e San Claudio, the ancient spiritual heart of the village, from which the procession departs. More than a spectacle, the Living Via Crucis of Frassinoro is a collective act of faith that involves entire families from the village, each responsible for a station, uniting devotional and cultural dimensions in a single, intense journey.

Living Via Crucis โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Living Via Crucis of Frassinoro took place on Friday, April 3, Good Friday, bringing back the great triennial re-enactment. Around 500 costumed participants animated the fourteen stations along the village streets, illuminated by over 15,000 torches, in a procession accompanied by the parish choir and the reading of the Gospel.
