The grand Nativity scene in costume in the medieval village of the Nevola Valley
The Living Nativity of Barbara is one of the most beloved and long-standing Christmas events in the Marche region. Its history began on Christmas Eve 1972, when a group of local youths, aged twelve to seventeen, decided to stage the Nativity. Since then, the tradition has been renewed almost continuously (with only a pause during the Covid period) and today involves hundreds of participants and the entire community of the Municipality of Barbara, a small village in the Nevola Valley in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region.
Set within the castle walls of the Castrum Barbarae and in the adjacent Public Gardens, the nativity scene is not just a simple exhibition but a true itinerant theatrical performance. Each spectator becomes a pilgrim who physically moves through the scenes: entering huts, visiting the temple, passing by Herod's palace and the homes of ancient crafts, immersed in the scents, sounds, and lights of a bygone era. The route retraces the history of humanity following texts from the Old and New Testaments, up to the birth of Jesus.
The heart of the event lies in its participants: over a hundred volunteers, of all ages, who wear accurate historical costumes and portray shepherds, artisans, soldiers, merchants, and biblical figures. The scenes of daily life, recreated with meticulous detail, evoke the authentic atmosphere of a village from two thousand years ago. The preparation work involves the Pro Loco of Barbara, local associations, and the Municipality for weeks, in a collective effort that has become part of the village''s identity.
The Living Nativity takes place on multiple days between late December and Epiphany, with the performance starting at 5:30 PM and the ticket office open from late afternoon. The venue is the historic center of Barbara, with setups in the Public Gardens adjacent to the ancient walls. Booking is recommended, but tickets can also be purchased on-site until sold out.
The visit to the nativity scene is also an opportunity to discover Barbara, a 13th-century castle-village dominated by its imposing keep and surrounded by sloping walls. Nestled in the hills of the Nevola Valley, the town is also known for its Verdicchio wine and olive oil production, and it houses the church of Santa Maria Assunta. A small gem in the Ancona hinterland that, on winter evenings, is illuminated by the magic of Christmas.
The 2025-2026 season, the 53rd of the event, enlivened the historic center of Barbara on several evenings between December and Epiphany, with New Year's replays scheduled for January 1, 4, 6, and 11, 2026. Over a hundred volunteer participants brought the Nativity and scenes of daily life from yesteryear to life along the route through huts, artisan workshops, the temple, and Herod's palace.
The performance began at 5:30 PM, with the ticket office open from late afternoon at the IAT office. Organization by the Pro Loco of Barbara, the Municipality, and local associations.
