Exhibition and Baroque route in the footsteps of Stefano Maria Legnani
With Legnanino, his traces in the city, Saronno pays homage to Stefano Maria Legnani (known as il Legnanino), one of the main protagonists of Lombard Baroque painting between the 17th and 18th centuries. The initiative, promoted by the Municipality of Saronno in the province of Varese, combines an exhibition and a cultural route through the city's sites that preserve traces of the artist.
The heart of the exhibition is the display of the painting 'Susanna and the Elders', housed in the Sala del Sindaco of Villa Gianetti. The work can be visited freely during the villa's opening hours, offering visitors the chance to admire Legnani's hand and his mastery in the dramatic and luminous rendering of the figures up close.
In addition to the exhibition, the initiative offers a route through the Baroque sites of Saronno: the Civic Library, the Church of San Francesco, and the parish church, which preserve traces of the art of the period. Guided tours on Sundays, organized in collaboration with the Associazione Cantastorie, lead the public to discover this often little-known heritage.
The municipal administration's goal is to promote a great 17th-century Lombard artist and make art history more accessible to citizens, enhancing local artistic heritage. For Saronno, the initiative is a way to rediscover its Baroque roots and offer residents and visitors a quality cultural itinerary in the heart of the province of Varese.
The 2026 edition of Legnanino, his traces in the city takes place in Saronno from May 29 to June 30. The painting 'Susanna and the Elders' is exhibited in the Sala del Sindaco of Villa Gianetti, while a route through the city's Baroque sites is accompanied by Sunday guided tours, in collaboration with the Associazione Cantastorie.
